The shooting at Brown University was a weird one, to say the least. The shooting seemed pretty straightforward. A gunman walked into a classroom and opened fire, killing two innocent people. That’s awful, but we can wrap our heads around those facts easily enough.
It was pretty much everything after that.
First, there was a person of interest arrested, and it seemed they were confident they got the guy, then they released him, all while officials weren’t telling anyone anything.
Then there was the shooting death of an MIT physics professor just a short distance from Brown that many latched onto as some kind of conspiracy theory sort of thing, believing they had to be related, though we were told by the FBI that they weren’t.
Now, it seems they have a suspect, but if you thought that would end the weirdness, you’re so very wrong.
Authorities have identified the suspect in Saturday’s mass shooting at Brown University, which left two students dead and nine injured during a finals week review session, as the same man believed to have carried out the murder of a renowned nuclear scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology days later.
His name is Claudio Manuel Neves-Valente, according to Providence police.
He was found dead Thursday evening, authorities announced at a press briefing Thursday evening, after law enforcement officers in tactical gear were seen outside a storage unit linked to him in Salem, New Hampshire, for hours.
Neves-Valente, 48, was a Portuguese national and studied at Brown from the fall of 2000 to the spring of 2001 to study physics, according to Brown President Christina Paxson. But he went on a leave of absence and ultimately withdrew in 2003.
A man with the same name was also terminated from a monitor position at the Instituto Superior Tecnico in Portugal in 2000, school records show. Authorities said they believe he is the same person as the killer.
Wait…he’s a Portuguese national?
Isn’t that the same nationality as the slain physics professor at MIT? And this guy was studying physics?
Yeah, and there’s more of a connection:
That’s also the same university attended by the renowned MIT nuclear physics professor Nuno Loureiro, who suffered fatal gunshot wounds Monday at his home in Massachusetts, about 50 miles away from Brown.
Of course, that might just be a coincidence, and I do happen to believe in those. However, this doesn’t feel like a coincidence to me, though the last five years have made me more inclined to pick out my favorite foil for headwear than I had been prior to 2020.
Still, this is weird on a whole new level.
There are issues with dead suspects, though. For one thing, it’s very easy for investigators to lay this crime at the feet of someone who can’t defend themselves while the real killer is running around. They can’t exactly question him, find out if he has an alibi, or anything, so it’s easy to just figure you got your guy and call it a day.
The fact that this guy died by suicide makes it even easier to do that.
I’m not saying that’s what’s happening, mind you, but with officials having been so tight-lipped and now suddenly they have a suspect who happens to be dead, it seems awfully convenient for them.
I hope I’m just being paranoid, though, because no one likes the idea of a mass killer getting away with such a horrific incident. We want them to get justice, either in this life or the next, and if this guy did it, then where he ended up was where everyone on God’s naughty list ends up.
I sincerely hope this is legit, and we can put this tragedy behind us and start moving forward.
There will undoubtedly be questions, including how he got his gun, and so on. Those will be answered in due course, I’m sure, and then we can start to have some kind of meaningful discussion about what happened.
Not that it’ll matter, because the usual suspects are already pushing for everything under the sun, all stuff they wanted since before the first shot was fired, and they won’t be happy unless we bend the knee.
That isn’t happening.
