Charlie Kirk Assassination: What We Know…Or, More Accurately, Don’t Know

Wednesday’s assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk is still recent, which means there are a lot of things we don’t know. We know a whole lot of awful people are celebrating his murder. They’re celebrating the fact that his wife and two children no longer have him in their lives. They’re celebrating, saying he had it coming, all because he said things they didn’t like.

We know that there are a lot of awful people in this country.

Beyond that, and what we learned yesterday, the big thing we learned this morning is that we don’t know a whole lot.

Last night, our sister site RedState reported that the authorities had someone in custody, but that person was later released and the search is ongoing.

Also last night, a vigil was held for Kirk at Utah Valley University. The attendance is what I would hope we’d see after something like this.

Hundreds of people attended a vigil for Kirk Wednesday evening at the Utah State Capitol building, CBS Salt Lake City affiliate KUTV reports. It was organized by members of the Utah House of Representatives.

Republican Rep. Karianne Lisonbee said, “This was Republicans, Democrats, and everybody coming together, denouncing this senseless violence that took Charlie’s life.”

Kirk was remembered as a passionate voice in American politics who was silenced for sharing his ideas, KUTV notes.

Additionally, a fence at the university was painted with the phrase “Say no to political violence.”

It’s a message that, frankly, should be universal. Cam will be writing on that later today, but understand that I agree with everything he’s going to say in that piece, just for the record. He’s speaking for me, too, for what it’s worth.

Unfortunately, something that we do actually know is that there are a ton of people who seem to think that Charlie Kirk got what he deserved. X is full of people saying it and others sharing it far and wide.

I find that troubling. I find it troubling because I make a living saying things people disagree with.

And the fact that the killer is still at large is also troubling, because it’s not a stretch to believe that whoever did this had an issue with a lot of other people who say things he (or she) doesn’t like.

Of course, we’re also just speculating that Kirk’s assassination was politically motivated, though that seems a fair assumption considering. There’s no reason to think anything else.

A gunshot from 200 yards away is a terrible way to mug someone, for example.

Mostly, I’m baffled by how little we know right now. There’s almost nothing new since yesterday, and while I’m sure we’ll learn plenty going forward, I’m still more than a little surprised at how little has been uncovered.

More accurately, at how little has been uncovered and made public. The feds could be sitting on mountains of information that they just haven’t shared for whatever reason.

What I will say, though, is that whoever did this should fear the might of the Department of Justice descending upon them, because this is not going to be pleasant for them.

Editor’s note: Gun control activists are already using assassination of Charlie Kirk to demand more restrictions on our Second Amendment rights.
