Cornyn’s Senate Seat: Please Come and Take It

As gun owners, we know all too well, politicians with their polished suits and D.C. handshakes have a hard time understanding what constitutes something being Constitutional. Our rights are often bargaining chips for funding, campaign promises and reelection fundraising. While anti-2A politicians are easy to spot in the Democratic Party, those behind the label Republican, conservative or “pro-freedom” are better at hiding their desires.

One such Republican is Senator John Cornyn. Cornyn’s not some distant bureaucrat; he’ the senior senator from the Lone Star State. He’s also a supposed conservative who’s spent decades in Washington whittling away at our rights. And now, with his 2026 reelection looming like a storm over the plains, his dirty little secret; the gun control deals he’s brokered…is blowing up in his face. It’s about time Texans see through the smoke.

Let’s rewind to 2017, with the Las Vegas concert massacre and the tragic mass shooting at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas. Even before answers as to basic questions were available, the media and all the “blame the guns” talk filled the airwaves. How did Senator Coryn react? He authored the Fix NICS Act, a sneaky expansion of the National Instant Criminal Background Check System. It dumped millions more Americans—veterans with PTSD, folks with sealed juvenile records—onto a federal “no-buy” list with no due process or abilities to appeal. Just another bureaucratic black hole swallowing rights under the guise of “safety.” 

As a survivor of violence, I get the itch to act after tragedy, but this? This is the government playing judge, jury, and executioner with your liberty. Cornyn called it “common sense.” I call it a foot in the door for the gun grabbers. [Editor’s Note- the act was also supported by the National Rifle Association and National Shooting Sports Foundation, and President Donald Trump signed the bill into law as part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act in March, 2018.]

Fast forward to 2022 and the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. Immediately afterwards that heinous mass murder of school children, Senator Cornyn correctly stated that such shootings are “every parent and teacher’s worst nightmare. No parent, child or teacher should ever have to wonder whether it’s safe to go to school.” 

Unfortunately, instead of becoming a champion for improving school safety, what did he do? He led the charge of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (BSCA), which ended up becoming the biggest federal gun control law in three decades. Partnering with Democrats Chuck Schumer and Joe Biden (yes, Biden even praised him for it.) Cornyn funneled $750 million into ineffective “crisis intervention” programs. If you translate this from political speak into words, these programs were nothing more than red flag laws on steroids. 

“Red flag” laws, officially known as Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPO) are not crisis intervention tools or public safeguards; they’re seizure warrants. Cops show up at your door based on a neighbor’s whisper or an ex’s grudge, confiscating all your firearms and leaving you defenseless, without any questions or due process. Red flag laws sound noble…flag the threats, right? But they are legally supported tools for the vengeful. 

Cornyn’s bill didn’t just fund these in 21 states; it greased the wheels for nationwide rollout. Despite his “guarantees” that this act was not designed to influence states for creating new laws we know that it was. He understood that a national ERPO would be struck down as unconstitutional, so he avoids the embarrassment and makes governors the scapegoats.

His efforts also facilitated the creating and funding of the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention; the media stunt intended to help Kamala Harris recover from her disastrous role as “border czar.” Senator Cornyn knew the risks; policy advisors, constituents and gun rights groups begged him to walk away. Instead, he dismissed us as “misinformed.” Misinformed? Try betrayed.  Those at the 2022 GOP convention understood this and were responsible for booing him off the stage. Even if you are indifferent to firearms, the $15 billion price tag alone was enough to justify removing him from office. 

Now, even during a full government shutdown and preparations for the 2026 midterm elections kicking off, the chickens are coming home to roost. Cornyn’s up for reelection and Texas gun owners are not forgetting. Polls show him tanking below 30% in a primary against AG Ken Paxton, a flawed fighter but one who at least talks tough on guns. Even Wesley Hunt, the Army vet with West Point grit, is nipping at his heels, hammering Cornyn’s role in the Biden-era gun control legislation. Gun rights warriors aren’t letting it slide. Texas Gun Rights fired off an open letter to President Trump in April expressing “for the future of the Second Amendment — and for the good of your movement — do not endorse John Cornyn.”

Why is there firestorm now? Simple: Texas and her voters are done with RINOs who virtue-signal after shootings then cave to the left. Cornyn’s not just any senator; he’s the guy who shepherded BSCA through, embracing “compromise” while the gun rights organizations and grassroots howled.

With Beto “hell yes were going to take your AR-15” O’Rourke in the running, Texas already has enough “gun grabbers” on the ballot. Senator Cornyn has hoped that everyone has forgotten his 2A betrayal and he can ride out reelection because his name is followed by (R). As a domestic violence survivor turned 2A absolutist and having stared down barrels of injustice, from courtroom plea deals that let my abuser walk, to policies that aim to disarm law abiding citizens, I know how I would vote. But come March, Texas can vote with their hearts, and their holsters.
