The idiotic game of “ding dong ditch” has been around a lot longer than the last few years. Friends of mine were fond of the game when I was growing up, all too many years ago.

You basically just knock on a door or ring a doorbell, then take off running.

It annoys the homeowner, it gives kids a bit of a thrill, but ultimately, no harm is done. It’s like calling someone and asking if their refrigerator is running.

These days, some have tried to liken the game to others kicking doors like they’re trying to bust in. That’s a lot different in my view, and while I understand that I can’t pull the trigger until they enter the house after something like that, I do understand some people taking a more proactive approach.

Yet a Florida woman managed to take the tame but stupid game and make it into an absolute mess by showing just how not to be a gun owner.

Tiffany Nicole Hall, 40, was arrested yesterday for allegedly pointing a gun at the head of a juvenile who knocked on her door with two friends and ran.

At about 5 p.m. on February 15, a Gainesville Police Department officer responded to the 3200 block of NW 18th Street, where three juveniles reportedly knocked on Hall’s door and ran, playing a prank known as “ding dong ditch.” They said they were walking down the street when a juvenile male ran after them, tackled one of them to the ground, and started punching him.

The victim said Hall walked up and pointed a gun at his head, which made him afraid he was going to die.

The juvenile who chased the kids and assaulted them is listed as a co-defendant.

Hall claims she didn’t threaten anyone, but does admit to having a gun in her hand when she confronted the kids. She claims she merely spoke with one of the kids’ parents.

Of course, these are allegations, to be sure, but understand that if kids ding dong ditch, this is not something you should display a gun over. If it’s in your hand, that’s threatening enough for a lot of people, to be sure. That’s called brandishing, especially if there’s anything that can be construed as a threat involved, such as Hall telling the kids that this was a good way to get shot.

Yes, she apparently admits to saying as much.

Guys, if this is happening, just call the police. Or, if you’re going to confront them while armed, keep it in your holster until or unless it becomes a case of there being an actual threat to you or yours. The ding-dong ditchers aren’t generally going to rob you or offer any other harm except to your peace and quiet.

As someone who values that myself, I get the temptation, but you don’t need to cross that line.

Hall allegedly did, and now she’s facing felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charges, as well as non-violent resisting arrest charges. All of that because she couldn’t handle kids knocking on her door, then running off.

If they’re running from you, they’re likely not a threat to you.

Just sayin’.
