I’m a veteran. I didn’t make anything special yesterday for Veterans’ Day because, honestly, there was enough going on that I didn’t feel the need. Still, it’s a special day for those of us who served, and it’s made special by all of you, veterans and non-veterans alike.

But then we have people like Giffords.

Now, I get that gun control groups are like anyone else in one regard. They’re going to try to leverage whatever day it is to try and make their marketing more timely or whatever. I get that.

Still, this just pisses me off.

Since 2006, veterans have died by suicide nearly 20 times more often than soldiers have been killed at war.

Since 2006, veterans have died by suicide nearly 20 times more often than soldiers have been killed at war.

Veterans deserve more than empty words. They deserve leaders who work to protect them.

But many in Congress are stopping the VA from flagging when a veteran is at a heightened risk of harming themselves or others, and therefore shouldn’t have access to a gun.

That’s a gross misrepresentation of what the VA was actually doing, of course. What they did was flag anyone who needed help managing their VA benefits, which is not the same as flagging anyone at a heightened risk of hurting themselves or others.

Plus, this was the way the VA did business for a while, so how have so many more veterans died by suicide than in combat if this is oh-so valuable?

Look, I didn’t serve in combat, so I won’t pretend to really understand what those guys and gals went through. What I do know, though, is that many of them need some help with what they went through, but a lot of them won’t go to the VA to get it–a benefit they earned through their sacrifices for this nation–if it means the risk of having their guns taken away.

For a lot of people this might not seem like a big concern, but when you’re someone who is constitutionally incapable of sitting with your back to the door in the restaurant, who scans every building they enter for exits and choke points, who tenses up at a bit of garbage on the side of the road, losing your guns means losing your sense of security.

We told these folks they had to carry a gun everywhere they went in country, and now we’ve got these people thanking them for their service by trying to leverage the VA to strip them of their right to keep and bear arms if they say the wrong thing at the wrong time, even if they’re not really a threat.

To quote the Great Climate Doomsayer, how dare you!

How freaking dare you try to leverage the day we honor my brothers and sisters in arms, for their sacrifices for this nation, for the torment they put themselves through to keep this nation safe, for the torments some still endure, all so you can try to score some political points for an effort every veteran I know finds abhorrent.

How dare you use yesterday to push your agenda like that, one that runs contrary to the oath we all swore, which called for us to support and defend the Constitution.

Yes, that includes the Second Amendment.

We need our veterans to get the help they need and deserve. Making it risky for them to ask for it helps no one.

Instead of “Thank you for your service,” Giffrds wants to spank us for it.

Editor’s Note: After more than 40 days of screwing Americans, a few Dems have finally caved. The Schumer Shutdown was never about principle—just inflicting pain for political points.
