Google Still Playing Political Games

Google Still Playing Political Games

Recently, Google made headlines when it admitted to targeting conservatives on YouTube, banning a number of creators because of their politics. They invited everyone who had been banned to return. Some have, while others either aren’t interested or just haven’t bothered doing so as of yet.

The problem, though, was always in the fact that while many on one side of the political divide said some inflammatory and false things, YouTube picked winners and losers by silencing one side, so those opinions cannot be heard.

Yes, they’re a private company and can do that if they wish, but on the same token, just because you can do something doesn’t make it right to do it.

It would be easy to assume, though, that because of the admission, the company would have also put an end to similar practices. After all, if they know it’s wrong, why wouldn’t it still be wrong with just a slightly different mechanism?

However, the company that once famously had the words “Don’t be evil” on the wall of its headquarters is still just as evil.

Across the internet, artificial intelligence “snippets” are pulling content from pro-gun publishers, summarizing it directly on search platforms, and stripping away the need for readers to actually click through to the original sites.

For mainstream outlets, this trend is damaging enough. But for pro-Second Amendment publishers like AmmoLand News, the impact is multiplied by Big Tech’s built-in anti-gun roadblocks.

A Digital Wall Around Pro-Gun News

Unlike lifestyle blogs or sports pages, gun-related news and reviews are trapped behind extra barriers. Search engines and platforms like YouTube often tag this content with “harmful content” warnings, age gates, or ad restrictions, making it harder to reach new readers or advertise to old ones.

This means when AI systems serve up snippets of AmmoLand’s original reporting, they cut off the ability for readers to continue on to the full article—while also preventing the site from regaining visibility by blocking pro 2A publishers from traditional ad buys to replace lost traffic.

The result: traffic declines that can’t be bought back.

…

This isn’t just about clicks. It’s about control. If Big Tech decides which news is “safe” to share, then Second Amendment reporting gets buried—and law-abiding gun owners lose a trusted source of information.

AmmoLand isn’t giving up, but we are struggling. To keep publishing, it needs its readers more than ever.

Here’s the thing, though.

I’ve seen it with Bearing Arms via the news feed. Despite being a significant voice in the Second Amendment space, with a lot of content being produced each day, do you know how often I actually see Bearing Arms content in my feed when I’m looking at topics that I know we cover regularly? Almost never.

What little I do find is Cam’s show, but only the YouTube link, versus his sharing of it here.

I’ve seen AI slop be presented as authoritative reporting on gun issues by Google, something I’ve asked them about, but have yet to get a reply to any of my inquiries, but not us. Ammoland shows up sometimes, as does The Truth About Guns, plus a few other pro-gun voices, but mostly I get mainstream media reports and leftist, anti-gun commentary. Some of that, such as stories from larger publications, makes a certain degree of sense.

But the lack of pro-gun anything has long been troubling, even as I look for topics specifically relating to gun rights and the pro-gun point of view.

In short, I cannot believe that Google has changed anything. Not really.

They know they’re the primary search engine out there, with none quite measuring up to the results it produces. Some might be more private, but they’re not quite able to produce results in quite the same manner, so most people stick with them. That means they have a lot of power over the information people see, especially if people aren’t quite sure where to look for another point of view.

“Don’t be evil” has morphed, but not by much.

They just crossed out the first word and moved on.
