In 2020, Hawaii banned so-called ghost guns. You can’t buy, sell, make, or own any such firearm, though homebuilt guns are still broadly legal under federal law. They’re just one of a handful of states that have attempted to crack down on privately made firearms, all because they claim such laws will keep criminals from getting those guns.

It was always an idiotic premise.

Criminals get guns without too much of a problem in this day and age, but they did that before 3D printers were common, too. So banning it, even if it stopped the private production of firearms, wasn’t going to have much of an impact.

However, now officials are shocked to learn that the law didn’t stop felons from getting “ghost guns.”

Maui police said the tragic killing of Officer O by a convicted felon with a ghost gun is sparking outrage.

So, how are criminals getting these untraceable weapons and are there any solutions?

The fatal shooting of Officer Suzanne O is putting a spotlight on felons accessing illegal firearms or untraceable ghost guns.

Maui police said the weapon used was most likely a ghost gun and ordered in parts online — their chief is demanding action.

“If you’re an ex-felon, you should not have access to firearms,” Chief John Pelletier said.

Hawaii law bans felons from possessing firearms, with a 10-year minimum sentence for using one in the commission of another felony, and that jumps to a minimum of 15 years if convicted of murder.

“People should be in fear of the criminal justice process. Probation or light sentences is absolutely ridiculous. That’s wrong,” Pelletier said.

Pelletier is demanding legislative action to crack down on the other parts that end up in Hawaii. The problem is that these are unserialized parts, and anyone can buy them elsewhere and ship them into the state through the mail. It’s just not a big deal for criminals because, well, it’s not like they care about the law in the first place.

When 3D printed firearms began becoming a viable option, it marked the end of any hope gun control had of making an impact on anyone. The fact that Hawaii is starting to realize that criminals are going to keep using this technology regardless of what they try to dictate is baffling. I thought it was obvious.

“But if we crack down on these other parts-“

How?

People still can lawfully own guns in Hawaii, despite the state’s best efforts. All of these parts are aftermarket upgrades or replacement parts. There’s no way you can stop people from fixing their guns or upgrading them, so how are you going to do a thing to prevent them from coming into the state? Especially since these are unserialized parts.

Or, and hear me out for a second, we recognize that gun control doesn’t stop bad people from doing bad things. It just inhibits regular folks who aren’t a threat to anyone.

There are better ways to deal with crime, one of which Pelletier hit on above, which is making criminals fear the repercussions of what they’re doing.

It’s too bad he lost the plot from there.
