ICE Takes Down Illegal Immigrant Police Hire in New Orleans

When it comes to gun control, police officers often get a pass. Not just their departments, necessarily, either. There are places where an officer can buy something illegal for the general public, just so long as he gets the go-ahead from someone high up in his department with written permission on department letterhead.

I suppose the reason for this, despite the typical anti-police hysteria among many anti-gunners, is that police are supposedly vetted to a higher degree than regular gun owners. Sure, we have to go through a background check, but cops have to deal not just with that, but a lot of training and observation that should, in theory, uncover any problems.

The reality is that police officers are people, and they come in all the same shapes and sizes as the general public, including those who play nice while being observed and being jackwagons when no one is looking.

Then we have the fact that the vetting process isn’t exactly foolproof, as a recent ICE arrest in New Orleans makes clear.

The Democrats pretend that ICE and Border Patrol are “terrorizing” our communities, but the reality is the exact opposite: ICE and Border Patrol are removing dangerous criminals from our cities, criminals that the Democrats are all too happy to turn loose in our neighborhoods with little regard for the consequences.

Those same Democrats, who haven’t met a gun control law they didn’t want to pass, are also more than happy to ignore immigration law and hand a service weapon to an illegal alien with an active deportation order. Thankfully, ICE made sure to apprehend at least one of these illegal aliens, a man from Cameroon, Larry Temah, with an active deportation order. He was a week away from graduating from the New Orleans PD academy.

A statement issued to Fox by DHS said, “This illegal alien from Cameroon, Larry Temah, is not only breaking the law with every step he takes in this country illegally, but the New Orleans Police Department hired him and issued him a firearm – what kind of law enforcement department gives criminal illegal aliens guns and badges? It’s a FELONY for illegal aliens to even possess a firearm. Sanctuary cities like New Orleans ignore ICE detainers and are protecting illegal aliens at the expense of American citizens.”

Not a good look for the Big Easy.

NOPD Supt. Anne Kirkpatrick claims there was nothing in Temah’s hiring packet to suggest he was an illegal immigrant, nor that he had an ICE deportation order.

There are three possibilities I can see here. Either Kirkpatrick or someone under her decided to remove that information so they could claim it wasn’t in there, they just flat out lied, or their screening process is so broken that an illegal with an active deportation order could get hired by the New Orleans Police Department.

A combination of two or more of these is always possible, too.

Just remember that when anti-gunners pretend that the police should get special treatment on guns.

Most law enforcement officers are good people who are just trying to do a hard job. Some are committed to keeping people safe while others were just in it for a paycheck. I honestly don’t care, so long as they do the job well, which most do their best to do.

But no process in the world can screen out every screwup, which New Orleans’ hiring an illegal immigrant who was up for deportation should make abundantly clear.
