“We need tighter gun laws.”

Every time there’s a high-profile shooting, someone comes out of the woodwork to say just this. Never mind that we don’t necessarily know anything about how the shooter got a gun; the answer is always gun control in their minds.

Take the shooting at a high school hockey game in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.

Yes, this is tragic, and it’s not something we should ever see happen at high school sporting events. What’s also tragic is just how predictable these anti-gunners actually are.

Child safety advocates renewed calls for tighter gun control measures following a Monday mass shooting at a high school hockey game in Rhode Island that left three people including the gunman dead and three others injured.

WPRI reported that the father of a North Providence High School senior shot five members of his family at a hockey game at Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket at around 2:30 pm local time. The student’s mother was killed at the rink, while his sister died after being rushed to a local hospital. Three other relatives are reportedly in critical condition at Rhode Island Hospital.
…

Gun control advocates demanded more than the customary thoughts and prayers.

“As a native Rhode Islander who has played many games in that very rink, this tragedy hits especially close to home,” Stop Gun Violence board chair Brian Lemek said. “That space holds memories of community, competition, and joy—and now it’s filled with pain no community should have to carry.”

“The only thing young athletes should worry about is the scoreboard—not their safety,” he continued. “Our kids deserve spaces that bring communities together, they deserve to be safe, and they deserve a future free from this constant fear.”

Now, I do happen to think that people should enjoy high school sports without fear of being shot. Considering how many high school hockey games get played throughout the country every year, with only this one having this kind of carnage, I’d say that we actually can enjoy high school athletics without fear of being gunned down.

With that said, though, the push for more gun control is far too typical, and it’s worth noting that this is Rhode Island.

Most people understand that Rhode Island’s gun control laws are ridiculously strict and have been for years. They’re bad enough that they make Illinois look like Texas when it comes to gun rights.

And they did nothing to stop this killing.

As of this writing, there doesn’t seem to be any indication of how the killer got his guns, so how can we say we need tighter gun laws? It’s only that the facts don’t matter in a case like this, only the opportunity to use dead bodies as a soapbox to push for the things you wanted all along.

Rhode Island has more than enough gun control laws on the books. Once again, all the gun control laws in a given place failed to stop a deadly attack. It’s a broken record, and we’ll keep playing it for just as long as people like these dipsticks keep pretending this isn’t a people issue.

Or, are they actually supporting the proposition of banning guns for transgender individuals? I won’t support it, but maybe they are?

If so, they need to step up and be explicit about it and then explain to their trans allies why they feel that way.

I doubt they will, though.
