Since ICE began rounding up illegal immigrants and deporting them, there have been a handful on the left who have started trying to be clever by asking where we are. After all, in their minds, this is tyranny, and most of us tend to say we have guns in the event of tyranny.
Never mind that nothing about this is tyrannical, that this is a reaction to a real problem that isn’t hurting American citizens.
But we’ve also heard a number of anti-ICE people start advocating for armed resistance. Don Lemon, for example.
One Los Angeles teacher, though, is in the spotlight because he not just advocated for that, but did so just a short time after a federal agent was shot.
A Los Angeles high school history teacher who serves as a spokesperson for a local anti-ICE activist group appeared to welcome armed resistance against immigration authorities after a federal agent and an illegal immigrant were shot hours earlier.
Ron Gochez, a teacher at Dr. Maya Angelou Community High School and a spokesperson for Unión del Barrio, spoke during a news conference Tuesday, criticizing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
“Don’t forget where you’re standing. This is South Central Los Angeles,” he said. “They [ICE] are not the only ones with guns in this city. Don’t forget that. And I don’t say that because I’m calling for violence; I’m saying that because the people have every right to defend themselves against masked, unidentified gunmen.
The problem is that ICE agents are usually identified as ICE agents. Their specific identity might be obscured, but when the cartels are offering bounties, can you really blame them?
And I hate to break it to Gochez, he really is calling for violence. Shooting law enforcement officers who are trying to arrest people who shouldn’t be in this country legally is violence.
Of course, Gochez isn’t finished with his time in the sun with a single bit on the news.
Oh no, his life is about to get interesting.
DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said the agency will be referring Gochez’s remarks to the Justice Department.
“These comments by a schoolteacher telling agitators to ‘not forget [ICE] are not the only ones with guns in this city’ and referring to law enforcement as ‘terrorists’ and ‘masked kidnappers’ are unhinged,” she said in a statement to Fox News Digital. “Calling for violence against law enforcement is un-American and beneath the conduct of someone teaching the next generation of Americans. This looks criminal and we will be referring him to the DOJ.”
I’ve taken issue with no-knock warrants before, in part because if the person living there has no reason to believe he’s under police investigation, he’s going to view it as an aggressive act by criminals and resist.
I’ve never advocated for shooting police who effect a no-knock raid, though. Why? Because you cannot just shoot police officers who aren’t actively trying to kill you for no reason. If you realize they’re police, you generally know they’re not killers. There might be some mistake.
What Gochez is doing is explicitly talking about people killing federal agents because he doesn’t like them enforcing a particular law.
No, I’m not sure it rises to the level of a criminal threat or incitement or anything else. If it doesn’t, then of course, there should be no punishment. But Gochez and others need to be very careful with the rhetoric they engage in.
In the wake of Charlie Kirk’s assassination, a lot of people were saying we need to lower the temperature.
This ain’t it.
Editor’s Note: The Schumer Shutdown is here. Rather than put the American people first, Chuck Schumer and the radical Democrats forced a government shutdown for healthcare for illegals. They own this.
