Liberal and progressives–yes, there’s a difference–vehemently dislike President Donald Trump. They have that right. They also distrust him, with many genuinely believing all kinds of awful things are heading our way, things that will ultimately turn our constitutional republic into a dictatorship.
They say it all the time. All you have to do is listen, and while many don’t really buy it, many others do.
The Firearms Policy Coalition’s Rob Romano, who uses his X account to talk about gun politics, posted this yesterday from Reddit.

Romano offered nothing with this because what more needs to be said? It’s a valid question.
In fact, it’s a question I’ve been asking of anti-Trump Democrats for years, especially when they start talking about how the president represents an existential threat to the United States and democratic principles.
It’s just funny now because this is someone on their side asking the question.
Look, I don’t think Trump is any sort of thing. I didn’t think Biden was, either. I think any president can move us closer to such a thing, especially if they don’t respect the Constitution as a whole, but he’s no existential threat to the nation.
Yet if you’re concerned with a descent into tyranny here in our nation–something that we are, in fact, facing after decades upon decades fo sliding that way–then you’ve got two choices: You can either get ready to fight it or you can get ready to live with it.
When various demographics that typically vote Democrat start buying guns, look at my history here. Look at my response every single time. I say, “Good!” If people are concerned about authoritarianism or violence directed at them or any other threat, arming themselves makes sense. It’s just not that difficult a concept to grasp.
The thing that gets me, though, is that people are generally saying that what’s happening in Los Angeles and other places is some kind of precipitating incident, that the ICE raids are somehow evidence that everything is going to crap and Trump is taking control, all while also saying that the government–most of which answers to Trump–is the only entity who should have certain types of guns, if not all guns.
It’s absolutely insane to think any such thing.
How are you going to fight him if you’re right and I’m wrong? With harsh language? Throwing insults at Trump isn’t going to do anything because he’s better at it than they are. They’d have to do something else, and that means resisting actual tyranny.
And they can’t because they think guns are icky.
The redditor above doesn’t get it, and I don’t get it either.
While what I think is bad differs from them in oh-so-many ways, the future holds so many untold threats to ourselves and our nation that it’s stupid to ignore the possibility that we might have to defend American principles at some point. It just makes sense that we’re able to do so.
And so many people not understanding that is baffling to me, even as they’re saying that threat is here.
