There is a problem here in the United States, and that’s if liberty were to fall here, there’s nowhere to go. There’s no escape route for those of us who don’t want the government to take everything from us, up to and including our guns, which is why so many of us have a line in the sand that cannot be crossed.

And I don’t see there being anywhere to go anytime soon. Too many other nations that are supposedly free really aren’t, and the trend internationally is for more regulation of everything and a complete and total lack of gun rights.

But Argentina might well be shifting in a more pleasing direction as President Javier Milei has just made a move that looks downright American.

Argentine President Javier Milei has officially authorised civilians to purchase and possess semi-automatic rifles, lifting a ban imposed in 1990.

The new resolution, approved by the government on Wednesday, establishes a control system based on sporting justification and traceability, replacing the broad prohibition with a set of requirements for obtaining a special permit.

The new requirements for civilian ownership include a specific identification of the semi-automatic rifle a person intends to acquire; the person must possess a registered G2-type storage area—a secure, certified system approved by the National Arms Registry—and a sworn statement detailing the specific grounds for the application, accompanied by supporting documentation and photographs of the material.

This reform directly replaces a 1990s decree issued during the administration of former President Carlos Menem, who ruled from 1989 to 1999.

That decree had largely prevented civilians from acquiring semi-automatic rifles unless explicitly authorised by the Ministry of Defence.

n June, the Milei government took the initial step by repealing the Menem-era decree.

Please don’t mind the formatting. This was apparently translated from some other language that reads the opposite of ours.

Anyway. Milei, who is an outspoken libertarian, is making the kinds of moves we might expect to see in the United States. Yes, the restrictions are still more than we’d tolerate, but as they say, Rome wasn’t built in a day, and restoring civil liberties to the people of Argentina won’t happen overnight, either.

The fact that they can buy semi-automatic weapons at all, after 35 years, is still big.

Of course, Argentinian anti-gunners will scream bloody murder and claim the streets will run red with blood, or however they phrase their fearmongering there, but when that doesn’t materialize, Milei will likely be able to repeal more of the restrictions. It’s possible that he might even be able to create actual gun rights in the country.

While I still wouldn’t want to feel like I have to move there as a fallback, should America actually fall, it’s nice to know that the option is at least possible. It won’t matter with regard to fighting to keep and restore our right to keep and bear arms here, but it’s an option for those who have no stomach or ability to fight, or if we lose somehow.

Plus, let’s be real here, the more pro-gun nations we can rally back into existence, the easier it will be to undermine the narrative of the United States being isolated in not seeing the supposed enlightenment of gun control.

Good on Milei, which I could probably write a million times a day in various ways–he’s about the only world leader outside of the United States I actually respect to any degree–and good for the people of Argentina.

Editor’s Note: The Schumer Shutdown is here. Rather than put the American people first, Chuck Schumer and the radical Democrats forced a government shutdown for healthcare for illegals. They own this.
