I love my kids. I care about kids in general. I want them growing up safe and sound, and it bothers me when they get hurt because jackwagons hurt them. When it’s intentional, there’s no punishment allowed by law that’s sufficient, but even when it’s unintentional, it’s something we shouldn’t just shrug off.
So I get people wanting to do something to protect kids.
I just think that the Louisville Metro Council’s latest resolution is pretty stupid.
The Louisville Metro Council reintroduced a revamped “Kids Over Guns” resolution calling for changes to Kentucky’s gun laws and asking the General Assembly to act urgently on “common sense” gun legislation. The measure also asks the General Assembly to allow Louisville Metro to pass its own gun-control rules.
The original resolution was withdrawn in 2025 and has been revised before being brought back this week. The Government Oversight Committee passed the measure, though it did not give the resolution a favorable recommendation. The proposal will go to the full Metro Council next week.
“I can agree with section one. Council urges the Kentucky General Assembly to act with urgency in addressing common sense gun legislation,” Councilmember Kevin Bratcher said.
However, he warned about local authority creating inconsistency. “You’re going to have a lot of problems when you got different laws in each county,” Bratcher said.
I’ve written a lot about preemption, and why it’s important, so I won’t belabor the point. It’s important, the legislature in Kentucky shouldn’t change anything, and the council will just need to learn to live with disappointment.
But what really bothers me on this one is the whole “Kids Over Guns” thing. It’s not one or the other, no matter how much they pretend it is, and the fact that they keep pushing this means they’re not doing anything that would actually help kids.
Even if all the guns vanished today, kids are still going to get hurt by people who are trying to hurt others. They’re going to be hurt because this inane focus on guns is nothing but a distraction from the real problem, the culture of violence that lives in way too many communities in this country. The idea that the only way to deal with someone talking smack about you is to kill them, which then triggers someone trying to kill you, and so on and so forth.
Undermine that, and you’ve got something.
Especially since these same people aren’t buying guns lawfully. The measures Louisville wants aren’t going to be anything more than misdemeanors, anyway, so it won’t even lock people up for long enough to make a difference. In short, this wouldn’t even accomplish the stated goal even if everything worked perfectly, but we also know that it won’t.
But by framing this entire thing this way, it shuts down any meaningful discussion because people like us have to defend ourselves against accusations that we want dead children or something equally vile. Of course, that’s probably the point here, but that doesn’t change the fact that everything about this, from the name of the resolution down, is absolutely idiotic.
