Marine Veteran Opens New Gun Range and Coffee Shop

I confess that I don’t really understand the crossover between the right to keep and bear arms and the enjoyment of a fresh cup of joe, but after the success of Black Rifle Coffee Company there’s no shortage of similar Second Amendment-supporting brands.

Most of those companies have focused on beans and coffee grounds that can be purchased online and shipped to your home, but one Marine veteran in Georgia is blending his love of guns and coffee with a new range and coffee shop that he hopes will catch on with his local community… even those who don’t (yet) own a gun.

Buck Holly is the founder and owner of C&H Precision, which makes a variety of optics and accessories. Now Holly’s opened up a new front in his gun-oriented businesses: Grounds and Rounds in Richmond Hill, Georgia, a combination gun store, range, and cafe featuring handcrafted coffee creations. The business just opened its doors a few weeks ago, and  Holly is anticipating another successful venture.

“When we first moved here, it was me and two other employees. Now we’ve got 45 or 50 people that work here,” Holly said. “We went from one machine to 14.”

Holly’s life has long revolved around firearms. A lifelong hunter, he joined the Marines, later launched his own company building precision rifles, and even competed professionally. Now, he’s on a mission to make shooting more approachable to people of all backgrounds.

That mission includes adding an unexpected element to his new facility—a coffee shop.

“I was standing in front of the parking lot before the building was built, and I watched four or five young ladies walk out of the YMCA in their Lululemon stretchy pants and their workout tops with their Stanley cups, walking to their cars,” he said. “So I thought: how do I make this place welcoming for them, too?”

His youngest daughter now helps run the café inside the range, a nod to the family-centered culture Holly has built. And she’s no stranger to shooting either.

“She shot her first wild pig at three and a half years old at 4:00 in the morning,” Holly said with a laugh. “Can you see the pride just oozing from my skin? Yeah. I’m proud.”

And rightfully so. But will the “Grounds” part of Grounds and Rounds take off, especially among non-gun owners? Could it even be used as entry point to get folks interested in taking their Second Amendment rights for a test drive?

I hope so, though there are plenty of other options in the area, including at least two Starbucks. And as Holly himself noted, lots of folks brew their own coffee at home, so visiting a coffee shop in a gun range might be a fun field trip, but it’s not exactly necessary to get your fix of caffeine.

Even if it doesn’t serve as a draw for non-gun owners, the shop should help make the range a community hub for those already exercising their right to keep and bear arms, and that’s not a bad thing at all. If it helps make the range a more inviting place for the gun-curious, all the better.
