The shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis didn’t create the reaction that Gov. Tim Walz and his fellow gun-grabbers hoped. They figured everyone would be tripping over themselves to support gun control, only to find out that their Republican counterparts weren’t on board with assault weapon bans and things of that kind.

Walz has still toyed with the idea of a special legislative session to take up the issue, but hasn’t, likely because he’d just waste everyone’s time, the state’s money, and still not get what he wants.

So, Democrats in the state are hoping a series of town halls will stir up folks to support giving up their rights.

Now, the Post Bulletin reports Democrat leaders in the legislature are going to take a swing at things by holding town halls around the state in hopes of stirring up gun control support.

Minnesota Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy (DFL) said, “Over and over again, we see polling data that shows a majority of Minnesotans support an agenda that would include banning high-capacity magazines and assault weapons.”

She claims the polling data shows support for said gun control is “in the upper 50s and low 60s, the percent of Minnesotans who say, ‘Yes, that’s the right thing to do.’”

Murphy failed to mention exactly which polls showed that kind of support, though, which is interesting. After all, without knowing which polls, we can’t look at the data and evaluate for ourselves as to whether the poll was an actual poll or one designed to reach a predetermined outcome.

Lying with polls is fairly trivial, after all.

Plus, let’s be real here, no matter how many town halls they have, if people support some degree of gun control, but they favor other policies far more, they’re going to vote on those other policies. You can’t rile people up enough to make them ignore things that are far more important to them.

Then we have the fact that town halls don’t really convert anyone, nor do they do anything for only lukewarm supporters of a given policy. Those who take their time to attend something like this, particularly when everyone knows where everyone on the stage stands, only attract the true believers.

In short, they’re going to accomplish nothing, but if it keeps them busy and out of people’s hair, I guess that’s a small victory.

Unfortunately, this won’t take them away from anything pressing like meddling in the lives of law-abiding Minnesotans, so it won’t by much of a victory in any way, small or not.

At the end of the day, I suspect that what we’ll find is that they’ll go around the state, preach to the choir, then pat themselves on the back for their good work, then be shocked when gun control doesn’t come to pass in the next legislative session because they didn’t actually do anything. They just spun their wheels and convinced themselves they went on a trip.

And they’ll blame their Republican colleagues for it, never realizing that they’re still representing the will of their constituents, even if the anti-gunners in Saint Paul can’t comprehend that.
