I don’t expect politicians to be unbiased. They’re elected because of those biases, after all. Expecting them to put them on a shelf somewhere is kind of ridiculous.
However, I’d really like it if they’d at least not be stupid because of those biases. Unfortunately, that’s way too much to ask for.
A prime example of that comes from Minnesota, where gun control is the talk of the state, as if there’s literally nothing else going on worthy of note. There’s a state Senate working group trying to come up with proposals. Eight lawmakers, with two co-chairs, both coming from the state’s Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party.
And boy, did we get a terrifyingly abundant supply of stupid from one of them.
Sens. Ron Latz of (DFL-St. Louis Park) and Zaynab Mohamed (DFL-Minneapolis) co-chair a senate working group — containing fellow DFLers and Republicans across the aisle — which began meeting this month to address gun violence prevention policy headed into the next legislative session. On Sept. 15 and 17, the group first met in the Senate chambers to deliberate on legislative proposals and hear testimonials.
The ad hoc group and its first meetings were announced just days after the Annunciation school shooting in Minneapolis killed two children and injured several others while they were worshipping in a morning mass.
“Minnesotans expect action that meets the moment to prevent any tragedy like this from ever happening again in any of our communities. This working group is an important part of that process,” the joint press release between Latz and Mohamed said.
…
“I am here to have a serious conversation about safe schools, safe neighborhoods, and those perpetrators of evil who are using instruments — multifaceted instruments — that harm others,” Sen. Eric Lucero of (R-St. Michael) said.
Lucero continued that Minnesotans want real solutions that involve protecting law-abiding citizens from “drug dealers and gang bangers,” and drew attention to the short turnaround to put together proposals before the meetings began.
“We were given approximately 36 hours to submit proposals by the 10 a.m. deadline … This seems to be rushed,” he said.
Latz countered, saying, “This conversation is about three or four decades too late.”
“After the Annunciation shooting, it took me 15 minutes to put together a six- or seven-point, broad-based proposal,” Latz added. “So I’m sorry, that excuse is no longer valid as far as I’m concerned.”
In other words, Latz already knew what he wanted and is using the Annunciation shooting to justify it. It’s stuff he wanted all along–for three or four decades, it seems–and now he has a chance.
But the truth of the matter is that there’s a lot about the Annunciation shooting we’re still trying to understand and talk about. For example, Latz is ignoring the total failure of the state’s red flag law, which suggests something about how effective that particular measure was, despite mass shootings being a prime reason they were pushed so hard by DFL members.
So now Latz is saying that all this stuff should have happened 30 or 40 years ago, but in 1995, the violent crime was dropping across the nation. The focus on gangs and gang violence was working. The homicide rate was about to start plummeting, something that would continue well after the federal assault weapon ban sunset in 2008.
There was no need for additional gun control measures because life was pretty good.
So yeah, this is weapons-grade stupid, not because he thinks we should have passed gun control long ago, but because he gave up the game right there. He started working on proposals even before he knew what all happened, which is a clear sign that he doesn’t actually give a damn about the kids that were injured or killed.
He just wants to use the tragedy to advance his own anti-gun agenda.
That’s stupidity. What’s worse is that it’s so blatant that he’s clearly not worried about losing his job over it. That’s the really stupid part.
