NAGR Rallies Support for NC Constitutional Carry Measure

North Carolina is a weird state in a lot of ways. It’s a Southern state, which would suggest that it should be pretty pro-gun, but it also has a history of some really terrible gun control laws. While they were rooted in Jim Crow, it took them a good long time to finally step away from that horrific legacy.

Recently, in one of the bolder moves in that direction, the state legislature passed constitutional carry.

Unfortunately, the Democratic governor vetoed it.

In a lot of cases, that’s that. However, we do give legislatures a mechanism for overturning the veto as part of the system of checks and balances, and that’s on the table in North Carolina.In fact, the state Senate has already voted to override Gov. Josh Stein’s veto. 

It’s a close thing, but currently, there’s just not enough support in the House to override that particular veto, which is something that the National Association for Gun Rights is trying to fix.

Of course, this was posted on Wednesday, which means today is the first day back in session.

The truth that cannot be overstated is that criminals are carrying without a permit. They don’t care about any of that. The fact that law-abiding citizens are restrained from doing the same is a grave injustice, especially because the laws on the books have never stopped criminals from carrying guns.

Further, look at the text of the Second Amendment sometimes. “[T]]he right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” That one word, “bear,” implies we are supposed to be free to carry firearms for our own protection anytime we want, without any interference from the government.

Hence the term “constitutional carry.”

Yes, it’s stupid that we have to go through all of this to get our rights back to where they should have been all along, but guess what? That’s life. We can complain about it, or we can fix it. It’s pretty clear the Supreme Court is going to do it for us, because they had a chance with Bruen, and they didn’t.

That means we have to take care of it legislatively, and North Carolinians deserve this chance.

Let’s not forget what happened on that bus in Charlotte. While buses are gun-free zones there, you’re deluded if you think that something like that can’t happen anywhere else.

No one should have to ask permission to exercise their rights. This bill will fix that, but there need to be enough votes to override the veto or else it’ll never happen.

Not with an anti-gunner sitting in the governor’s mansion, anyway.

Fix this and watch the state become a whole lot safer.
