Contrary to some concerning information, I still believe that one of the best ways to protect the Second Amendment is to get more law-abiding people owning guns. While not every gun owner becomes a gun voter, many of them do. This is regardless of any other factor.
But one key is to get them buying guns, which is easier said than done.
Luckily, plenty of people are buying them, with more than a million doing so last month alone.
According to national background check data, Americans picked up over a million firearms last month, again.
October saw no less than 2,289,774 background checks logged by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System. That is on par with the 2,298,383 checks done in October 2024.
After the National Shooting Sports Foundation crunched the data to remove gun permit checks and rechecks, the adjusted figure for likely retail sales stood at 1,299,312, which remains on par with the October 2024 NSSF-adjusted NICS tally of 1,302,857.
Of course, October of 2024 was when we were leading into the election, when tensions and rhetoric were high, and a lot of people were concerned regarding what would happen on election day.
And we still almost hit those numbers last month.
To put this in perspective, the current annual rate of new car purchases is 15.3 million, which puts the monthly average at 1.275 million.
In other words, guns are outselling cars, at least in October–and it should be noted that October was a bad month for car sales–and gun companies are suppressed in their marketing efforts. Car advertisements are pretty much everywhere. Gun marketing is relegated to outdoor-focused networks and magazines, as well as companies’ social media accounts.
Of course, cars are much more expensive, but they also come with handy financing options right there in the story. I’m pretty sure the new Academy Sports here in town doesn’t offer any such thing, and I know the mom & pop stores don’t, so I’ll call it a wash.
So yes, this is good news for gun rights, but only to a point.
A lot of those gun sales were to people who already have guns. There’s nothing wrong with that. Guns are like potato chips. You can’t have just one. This is a fact my wife refuses to accept, despite my not actually lacking in the gun department. I still don’t have enough, and that’s probably true for many of you.
But a lot of those sales were to new gun owners, and that’s good news for all of us. It’s not just the firearm industry benefitting, but gun rights as a whole, because some of those people are now aware that no, you can’t just order a gun on the internet and have it shipped to your house, gun stores actually do take care to follow the laws on gun sales, and that a background check is conducted on the vast majority of firearm sales.
They know better. They know how much of the rhetoric is false or misleading, and they’ll start pushing back when anti-gunners start spreading that nonsense.
Editor’s Note: The Schumer Shutdown is here. Rather than put the American people first, Chuck Schumer and the radical Democrats forced a government shutdown for healthcare for illegals. They own this.
