Nevada is the site of the worst mass shooting in the modern era. The Route 91 Harvest music festival massacre was horrific. I still remember the days and weeks just writing about that awful atrocity. It left a mark on my soul, and I did all of that here in Georgia. I can only imagine what it was like for those more directly impacted.

But the problem with any such event is that some people are absolutely convinced that any and all gun control is good, that it should be passed and that it’s inexcusable to have an issue with anything.

Which is why we get terrible ideas like this one:

Nevada’s Democratic lawmakers are trying again to advance gun-control legislation, including measures to ban firearms from election sites and prohibit anyone younger than 21 from purchasing or possessing a semiautomatic shotgun or assault rifle.

Asm. Sandra Jauregui, D-Las Vegas, said despite similar efforts falling to vetoes in 2023, it is an issue she will not stop fighting for. For Jauregui it is personal. She is a survivor of the 2017 shooting at the Route 91 Harvest music festival, which claimed the lives of 60 people.

Gov. Joe Lombardo defended his veto of the polling place gun ban in 2023 because of a ghost gun provision he felt was unconstitutional. Jauregui pointed out this time around, that component isn’t there.

“I am hoping that the governor will sign my bill because he has even said in interviews that he agrees election sites are sensitive locations,” Jauregui pointed out. “This is a stand-alone, clean bill now that only impacts election sites. And I don’t know anyone who doesn’t believe that everyone should exercise their most fundamental right to vote without fear of intimidation.”

Jauregui added she hopes her Republican colleagues can get on board. In 2023, both of her bills passed on party lines. She called the pieces of legislation common sense and believes the issue should be nonpartisan.

First, let’s talk about the age limit thing being proposed here.

While Jauregui cites the Uvalde killer buying his guns when he turned 18, it should also be remembered just how many massacres have been carried out by people under the age of 18, including the Columbine massacre. There’s also been a whole lot of people over 21 who have killed a bunch of people with a wide variety of firearm types, which means this isn’t going to stop that particular problem.

The Route 91 Harvest music festival killer, for example, was well over 21.

All this does is treat legal adults under the age of 21 as if they’re second-class citizens, which we’re not supposed to have. The fact that handguns are also restricted at the federal level for such people doesn’t justify this nor negate my argument. That restriction is wrong, too.

Now, let’s talk about turning election sites into gun-free zones.

Yes, the Bruen decision did say some sensitive places were justifiable places to make gun-free zones and Lombardo has said he thinks election sites are one such place. Such a measure would likely survive a judicial challenge.

But let me ask Jauregui one thing: Why? Why is this so important here and now?

I ask because there’s not really been a history of incidents at polling places, either in Nevada or in other places where people can lawfully carry to election sites. So why is it so important to restrict them all of a sudden?

The answer, of course, is that there’s no real need to do so beyond the anti-gun desire to make as many places gun-free zones as humanly possible, all so people will be effectively disarmed out in public as completely as possible. There isn’t a history of lawful gun owners carrying firearms lawfully and suddenly shooting people at polling places. It just doesn’t happen, and yet, this is where they’re going here and now.

If Lombardo does sign this measure into law, mark my words. It will not be the last place they try to ban guns from by any stretch of the imagination.
