NSSF Dismantles Minnesota’s Anti-Gun ‘Town Halls’

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz is very upset that not everyone in his state is willing to bend the knee on things like banning so-called assault weapons. Because of that, he can’t have his special legislative session specifically to pass gun control, like banning so-called assault weapons.

Why do people hate Tim Walz and the children so much…but mostly Tim Walz?

The answer, of course, is that gun control is a terrible idea that makes no sense at all when you consider the fact that bad people cannot be stopped with laws.

Regardless, the state’s anti-gunners have decided to have some town halls across the state to agitate for gun control. Or did they?

To hear the NSSF’s Larry Keane tell it, it’s not really a town hall at all.

Minnesota’s political leadership is aggressively mounting a gun control blitz that dances around the Constitution and sidesteps the state’s own lawmaking process. From city-level ordinance proposals to a statewide town hall show, Democrats in the Land of 10,000 Lakes are relying on scripted and astroturf political theater, despite voters’ rejection of their goals.

That’s not the legislative process; that’s political theater aimed at restricting a fundamental right.

Cue the Roadshow

Earlier this month, Gov. Tim Walz tried to jam through a special gun control legislative session, but pro-Second Amendment legislators rejected the proposals. Now, Gov. Walz and Democratic legislative leaders announced their own plans for a series of “town halls” across Minnesota, trying to “rally public support” for an unconstitutional ban on Modern Sporting Rifles (MSRs) and other restrictions.

To call these “town halls” would be a stretch. The first event was scripted and coordinated by numerous gun control groups, including the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) Party and Everytown-affiliated Carver County Moms Demand Action. In addition to Gov. Walz, roughly 800 attendees were pre-selected through a screening process. Gabby Giffords, the former U.S. Congresswoman from Arizona and co-founder of the gun control group Giffords, and other Democrats including Minnesota state Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy, Minnesota state House DFL Leader Zack Stephenson and state Rep. Lucy Rehm were all on hand to answer pre-screened and pro-gun control questions.

“We’re here to listen to the demands of Minnesotans, to hear from those directly impacted, and to push for gun reform that will keep our communities safe,” Gov. Walz said.

Despite his characterization of this being a “conversation,” the governor’s town hall allowed only activist-approved talking points and pre-selected questions in front of an audience consisting of carefully pre-screened individuals.

It was certainly not a public conversation to hear any real meaningful input from Minnesotans.

Oh, that’s just rich.

An actual town hall is really about give and take. While the speakers might all represent a particular side, they should expect to be challenged by members of the audience.

The fact that this not only isn’t happening but isn’t even permitted makes it clear that this is nothing but propaganda.

I’ve been critical of the whole town hall thing from the start, in part because I didn’t figure you’d see a whole lot of movement on anything because pro-gun people aren’t going to go to something like that to be lectured. I failed to mention that some will just to bring up the other side of the debate, to challenge people like Walz on gun rights.

Yet they’re not being permitted to speak in a stage production designed to mislead people into thinking they’re seeing an open discussion of the issue? That’s disgusting on so many levels.

It’s also telling.

It tells me that Walz and company know they can’t win on the issue in and of itself. They need to stack the deck in their favor because if pro-gun voices get a chance to talk, they’re likely to get curb-stomped in the ensuing debate.

Anti-gun zealots in Minnesota want gun control and aren’t above trying to mislead the public into believing it’s massively popular, all in hopes that people will be deceived.

If it’s scripted, it’s not a town hall.

It’s community theater.
