If there’s one thing I’ve noted about the United States, it’s that despite having more opportunity than anywhere else on the planet, we have a lot of folks who seem to think killing one another is a good use of their time instead of trying to make something of themselves.

For some reason, Americans are particularly violent compared to other developed nations.

This is an unfortunate fact that gets used by people trying to claim our problem is that we don’t mimic their gun control laws. The latest example comes from a publication in Sri Lanka, though the author at least implies they’re American.

After the author laments the shootings, she tries to shoot down our arguments for opposing gun control.

“So untouchable is gun control in the United States that some even double down, saying restricting firearms would lead to more violence because victims wouldn’t be able to defend themselves against perpetrators, never mind that in the case of the Bondi Beach massacre, an unarmed man tackled the gunman with his bare hands, ensuring that more lives would not be endangered.”

She neglects to note how many people were killed in that attack compared to, say, the attack in a church in White Settlement, Texas, or in the Greenwood Park Mall. Armed citizens in those two locations ended the attack well before more than a dozen innocent lives could be snuffed out.

Weird.

What the author, whose name I can’t remember how to spell from that page to this one–they disable the ability to copy and paste for some reason–seems to think that what we need is to see the bodies of dead people, that the media trying to spare the sensibilities of their audience is just making the problem worse, and if we can see the devastation of guns, we’d support them being restricted.

Boy, is she a freaking moron.

Look, no one who supports gun rights thinks for a second that guns can’t be used to kill someone. For many of us, that’s why we have them, so we can stop someone who is trying to kill us.

Plus, I guess she forgets that the United States is a particularly violent nation. Even if you did everything she suggests and it had the effect she wants, then what? We tend to have more homicides from non-firearms than most developed nations have in total, which means we’d still top the list without guns.

And only someone even dumber than this woman would think that none of those homicides would have happened with another weapon had a gun not been available.

Let’s also not forget that the Washington Post tried exactly what she suggested. They showed unedited photos from Uvalde. No blurring, no pixelation, nothing except the raw photos.

All that happened is that I got more pissed at the Uvalde Police Department. It didn’t move the needle at all.

See, while the author thinks we need to be traumatized more by gun violence and wants the media to do it, the truth is that Americans aren’t that bothered by that ugly reality. They have their views, and it’s with an understanding that killings that involve firearms aren’t exactly sterile. Besides, most people recognize that it’s a person responsible for the heinous actions, not an object that lacks the ability to act on its own.

But I will note that if you do stuff like that more, some people are going to become even more fascinated by it and it could have profound psychological effects that will cause more deaths.

Just sayin’.

Then again, when you actually think putting a shooter down after they’ve killed 15 people is just as good as putting them down after just one, I’m not inclined to take anything you say seriously.
