Petulant Walz Blames Republicans for His Own Political Cowardice

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz is once again blaming Republican lawmakers for his own unwillingness to call a special session on gun control. As the governor signed a pair of executive orders on Tuesday meant to promote the use of the state’s “red flag” law and create a working group to develop a “comprehensive blueprint” for violence prevention (i.e., gun control), Walz pointed the finger at Republicans in the state House for not going along with his call to ban so-called assault weapons and large capacity magazines.

The chair of the Republican Party called Walz’s orders a “clear admission of weakness” after the governor abandoned his earlier call for a special session on guns.

“Minnesotans don’t need more task forces or political theater. They need a governor who will enforce the law, support law enforcement, and hold criminals accountable,” GOP Chair Alex Plechash said in a statement.

Walz seethed when asked about the statement by reporters and encouraged Plechash to say it in front of Annunciation parents. “What a weak, horrible thing,” Walz said.

I’d say it’s a weak and horrible thing for Walz to use those parents as political human shields for his own cowardice and unwillingness to find common ground on issues like school security and mental health funding.

These parents are free to push for whatever gun controls they want, no matter how ineffective or unconstitutional they might be. But that doesn’t change the fact that Walz and Walz alone has the power to call a special session, and he’s refused to do so because he doesn’t have the votes for a gun and magazine ban; not just because of Republican opposition, but because there are several of his fellow Democrats who aren’t on board with his vague calls for an “assault weapon” ban.

Walz won’t acknowledge that political reality, at least publicly. Instead, he once again tried to pin the blame on Republicans like House Speaker Lisa DeMuth, claiming that she could allow for an up-or-down vote on a gun ban bill that has yet to be introduced or even outlined to the public and lawmakers.

There is one person in Minnesota who can call a special session — and he’d rather spend his time mocking anyone who has asked him, repeatedly, to provide specifics on his gun control wishlist.

Instead of trying to govern via vague ideas and mockery, the governor should tell us… https://t.co/oz7wgbrRbq

Republicans have put forward plans to increase spending on mental health and provide schools across the state with grants to improve physical security, but Walz is holding those funds hostage by refusing to call a special session, even though he previously vowed to do so.

If it weren’t for Walz, money could have already been appropriated for K-12 schools, both public and private, to ensure that classrooms can have locking doors instead of curtains, broken windows can be fixed, and entrances can be secured. It’s entirely Walz’s decision to keep these schools in their current condition, and the only reason he’s doing so is that he can’t get his way on a gun and magazine ban that he won’t even detail to Minnesotans.

During his latest act of political theater, Walz went after groups like the MN Gun Owners Caucus as well.

Before signing the orders, Walz addressed the critique from gun rights advocates that any sort of gun control policies violate the Constitution.

“These actions today don’t limit your freedoms at all. Being shot dead in your school certainly does,” he said.

Even if these executive actions don’t limit freedom, the gun and magazine ban that Walz wants to see absolutely would. And contrary to Walz’s emotional argument, we just saw at Brown University that a state’s restrictive gun laws won’t stop a committed killer. Rhode Island has banned “assault weapons” and magazines that can hold more than ten rounds, and those laws didn’t prevent someone from walking on campus and opening fire on a classroom full of students.

There’s stiff competition for the title of Worst Politician in the U.S., but Walz is definitely a top contender. His duplicitous arguments in support of banning commonly owned arms are bad enough, but the fact that he’s petulantly refusing to do anything to improve school safety or access to mental health until he can get his way on gun control is downright disgusting.
