President-elect Donald Trump isn’t perfect on guns. He’s the guy who directed the ATF to reclassify bump stocks, after all, though I know why he did it. He also made comments about taking guns and providing due process afterward.

But, all in all, he was far from a terrible choice when it came to guns in a broad sense. Considering who he was running against, it wasn’t even a decision. First Biden, then Kamala Harris; both were highly in favor of gun control and were bound and determined to cram it down our throats.

Now, a new poll sent to me by the Second Amendment Foundation shows that people understand that quite well.

The Second Amendment Foundation has just released the results of a national survey it commissioned which reveals a majority of American voters believe incoming President Donald Trump and a Republican majority in Congress will better protect Second Amendment rights than Democrats.

The same poll, conducted by the internationally-recognized firm of McLaughlin & Associates beginning on Dec. 11, also says 76 percent of voters believe it is important to appoint judges to the federal courts who will “make it a priority to strictly follow the Second Amendment.” Only 15 percent say it is not important at all.

“The McLaughlin poll asked five pertinent questions about gun rights,” said SAF founder and Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb, “and the results affirm what we’ve known all along. Trump’s return to the White House in January, coupled with GOP control on Capitol Hill, bodes well for rights which the current administration has tried to trample for the past four years.”

“Americans continue to cherish their Second Amendment Rights as the results of our recent national survey clearly show,” said Jim McLaughlin, CEO of the famous polling firm. “Overwhelming majorities of voters want their political leaders in Washington to defend Second Amendment rights (77%).  Furthermore, three out of four voters (76%) say it is important to nominate and confirm judges to the federal courts who will make it a priority to strictly follow the Second Amendment and nearly two-in-three voters (63%) think President Donald Trump will make it a priority to protect and defend the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding gun owners. It is safe to say that Americans are clearly excited about the results of the November elections and the rights of gun owners remain very important to voters.”

“This survey underscores the prevailing public perception that Democrats have become the ‘party of gun prohibition’,” Gottlieb stated. “The numbers also justify SAF’s commitment to defend the Second Amendment in our various court challenges, winning firearms freedom one lawsuit at a time.”

Nothing about this is overly shocking, but as Gottlieb notes, it’s more damning for Democrats.

There are an estimated 400 million guns in private hands as of the last time anyone bothered to estimate. While a lot of people own more than one gun, that still means a whole lot of people support gun ownership to some degree or another.

And they don’t trust Democrats to do it.

When you look at the absolute trouncing Republicans gave them in the November elections, one can’t help but wonder how much of it was due to their Second Amendment animosity. Especially as many were also in favor of defunding the police not that long ago. It doesn’t take a particularly astute individual to see the problem with “you can’t protect yourself and we’re not going to pay the cops to protect you either.”

That’s also without the understanding that the police have no duty to protect you.

So I can’t say anything in this poll is particularly surprising. It may not make much of a difference to a lot of people, but for those who value gun rights, there’s never any real choice, now is there?
