Robert Francis “Beto” O’Rourke is currently facing the prospect of getting tossed in jail over a contempt of court charge for his fundraising efforts on behalf of fleebagging Texas Democrats, but he’s also showing his contempt for we the people and our right to keep and bear arms.

It’s been six years since O’Rourke infamously said “hell yes” he would “take your AR-15, your AK-47” if elected president; a move which permanently endeared him to the gun control lobby but rendered him unelectable in the Lone Star State.  O’Rourke had already lost his Senate campaign against Ted Cruz when he came out in favor of gun confiscation, and went on to lose to Texas Gov. Greg Abbott in the 2022 gubernatorial race.

O’Rourke’s been weighing jumping in to the 2026 Senate race, and has been making the rounds on progressive podcasts and shows in recent weeks… including one recent appearance where he was asked about his desire to take guns away from their lawful owners.

Appearing on the podcast “Hasan Minhaj Doesn’t Know” on Wednesday, O’Rourke was asked whether he regretted making the “extremely unpopular” statement.

“No,” he told Minhaj. “We talked a little bit about this earlier, but you know, 23 people in my community had just been killed because it is perfectly legal in this country to buy an AK-47.”

I’m calling B.S. on “Beto.” The reason why 23 people in his community had been killed is because a monster decided to commit an act of mass murder. If he had run down patrons in a Walmart parking lot using a truck, would O’Rourke have demanded the federal government go around and start confiscating F-150s?

Actually, I wouldn’t but it past him to do just that. Still, blaming the inanimate object used to take lives instead of the person who chose to engage in an act of mass murder is absolutely asinine. But Robert Francis O’Rourke is sticking to his guns… or rather, his gun controls.

Following the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, in 2022, O’Rourke gave a fiery speech about gun control after being escorted out of a news conference where he confronted Gov. Greg Abbott, R-Texas, over the tragedy.

Minhaj asked O’Rourke whether his sentiment that day reflected the “median voter in Texas,” or the “median comment” in his social media comment section, because “clearly, the people of Texas… don’t want this change.”

The former Texas representative did not directly answer Minhaj’s question, but noted that he has been working on finding “common ground” with Republican voters in his state on the issue of gun control.

Yeah, and that common ground is going to be on O’Rourke’s turf, not theirs. It’s not like he’s going to come out in favor of permitless carry or change his mind about banning semi-automatic firearms. It’s about persuading Republicans to embrace any kind of gun control lmeasure, and then building on that success.

I still believe that there actually is common ground to be found, but it doesn’t involve going after our right to keep and bear arms. Support for targeted deterrence efforts, including programs like Operation Ceasefire that offer a carrot-and-stick approach to getting high-risk individuals to stop shooting and change their lives, can and should enjoy bipartisan support. These programs can drastically reduce violent crime, and they don’t involve putting a single new gun law in place.

Unfortunately, that’s not what O’Rourke is looking for. He still wants to take our guns away, and thankfully Texans have had the good sense not to put him in any position where he can enact his authoritarian gun ban schemes. Let’s hope it stays that way if O’Rourke decides to mount yet another run for statewide office next year.

Editor’s Note: Robert Francis “Beto” O’Rourke is just willing to say out loud what most Democratic politicians are already thinking.
