Sig Sauer’s Response to P320 Controversy Not Covering Company in Glory

The Sig P320 is a pretty popular pistol with a lot of people. I have friends who have them and love them. The military adopted it as the pistol is the M17 and M18, with the latter being the shorter barrel version of the pistol.

However, there have been issues with the guns for years. I started covering them right after I started writing here at Bearing Arms back in 2017.

Yet over the reason, the problem persisted.

Over the weekend, Sig took to social media to…ahem…address the issue.

First, I get that they’re more than a little sensitive about the criticism. These are a popular enough firearm that pulling them might well hurt the company’s bottom line, especially as this is also the military’s sidearm.

But I’m more than a little bothered by the implication that this is some kind of agenda-driven, anti-gun attack.

I’m someone who has reported on some of the instances time and time again, including reports of problems with the M17/M18 pistols in the military’s arsenal.

For example, I wrote about the issues the Milwaukee Police Department had with their P320s. These were reportedly guns going off while in the holster.

Am I part of the anti-gun media? Am I driven by an agenda?

Well, I guess I am. My agenda is that guns shouldn’t go off while in the holster. Not because I don’t value the right to keep and bear arms and just want to hurt a gun manufacturer, but because I don’t want people being injured or killed by their own guns.

Sig argues that they’ve won in court, that cases have been thrown out all over the nation. This is true, but not all of them have. In fact, Sig Sauer lost a case involving the P320 in a Georgia court in June, 2024. 

Understand that I ask questions because there’s a lot of talk about this particular firearm doing this one particular thing that doesn’t happen with any other gun. The idea that this is really just an anti-gun hit job by the usual suspects ignores the way they tend to operate. Look at what Glock is dealing with as companies try to blame them for full-auto switches. They’re claiming the company is liable because of something that can happen with every gun Glock sells.

Then, of course, there’s the video evidence that contradicts Sig’s claims, which were presented in response to the X version of the above post.

Of course, in the midst of all of this, there’s the simple fact that Sig has previously had a “voluntary upgrade” of the P320, which suggests that they knew there was a problem all along.

While we’re at it, let’s look at what else folks said over there, because some of the reactions are funny. Sure, Sig had supporters, but there were others who are more than a little skeptical, too.

Honestly, the way Sig has handled this hasn’t done the company any favors. Trying to make this out to be an anti-gun attack despite it ignoring literally every other product in their lineup isn’t helping, and not just because of the implication that some of us in the pro-gun community are being anti-gun.

Here’s one post on X that I think sums up my feelings about how they’re dropping the ball here pretty well.

As someone who is literally in the market, ready to buy, and been very tempted by a P320, I’m going to say this isn’t the way you assuage fears over your product.

This doesn’t make me want to buy it. Sure, I agree there’s a zeitgeist out there that acts to make me concerned over…

They could do better. They could have addressed this years ago. They didn’t.

Now, it’s starting to be enough of a problem they’re declaring that as of now, “it ends.”

That’s not Sig’s call. Not if their guns are actually doing this, and based on those videos above, it sure looks like they are. Do better, Sig, and you won’t have to worry. Instead, you’re making it so a lot of people have no interest in any of your products.
