One of my many issues with red flag laws is that the kind of things they’re claimed to be necessary for are covered by other measures. Those who are a threat to themselves can be held on a 72-hour hold for evaluation, which also keeps them away from any other method to claim their own life.
That leaves potential mass murderers.
As I’ve pointed out before, there are generally signals that come up before someone does something. Simply recognizing there’s an issue and reporting it can do wonders. I’ve written about numerous cases of that happening, all without a red flag law being necessary.
Today, I’m talking about one more.
A 15-year-old girl who allegedly stole a Glock pistol and two loaded magazines from her mother’s safe is accused of plotting a mass shooting at Allegan High School.
Mya Barron allegedly wrote online that she would ram her father’s vehicle – loaded with gasoline and fireworks – through the cafeteria windows by putting a cinderblock on the gas pedal.
She allegedly said she believed the vehicle would explode in the cafeteria.
“If it does, that should cause enough chaos for me to get in, shoot the cop in the lunch room, and just go trigger happy on anyone I see,” Allegan police said in a written arrest affidavit.
Barron, charged as an adult, was arraigned Thursday, Sept. 25, by Allegan County District Judge Christopher Burnett on charges of safe breaking, a potential life offense; false report or threat of terrorism, a potential 20-year felony, and two lesser counts involving the firearm.
Barron is held in the Allegan County Juvenile Center.
In this case, the police took the threat seriously, investigated, and found that she had, in fact, taken steps to carry out her plan. Namely, she broke into her mother’s gun safe–so much for mandatory storage laws–and took a pistol as well as magazines. The report doesn’t say which model Glock was taken, so since Michigan currently lacks magazine restrictions, it’s difficult to say how many rounds that gave her.
If we assume 15, as that’s probably a good assumption overall, that would have given her 30 rounds in an environment where she’d already eliminated the one person with a gun who could stop her.
That’s one issue with armed police as the only security available. They’re the primary target, then there’s no one to stop the rest of the attack.
Let’s give credit to the police in Allegan County. I don’t know if these were county cops, sheriff’s deputies, or city officers, but whoever it was did the right thing, investigated, and made the arrest.
That’s what should have happened in Parkland when the Broward County Sheriff’s Office responded to numerous domestic violence calls, but it never did. That’s a case of hindsight, though. It’s easy to see the issue now, and while I’m sure it should have been obvious there was a problem then, I’m trying to show a little grace to most of those officers.
Here, they did the right thing, and again, notice the lack of a red flag order.
When someone is planning something like this, you don’t need one. The act of planning a massacre is illegal. They did what they were supposed to do and stopped a slaughter.
So, instead of talking about a tragedy in Michigan, we’re talking about some disturbed young teen who is sitting in a juvenile detention facility as she awaits her fate going forward.
That’s good news anyway you cut it.
