Thoughts About Pirro’s Walkback Comments

US Attorney for DC Jeanine Pirro really stepped in it recently. She claimed that anyone coming from outside the district who had a gun was going to jail, and that upset a lot of pro-gun people who supported her taking that role

It comes amid other unfortunate comments from Trump administration officials in the wake of the shooting of Alex Pretti, and that wasn’t great timing, to say the least.

She tried walking back those comments, as Cam noted on Tuesday.

There, Cam responded to Pirro’s statement by saying:

Unfortunately for Pirro, I don’t think she did herself any favors here. Among other issues, Pirro said her goal is to “take guns out of the hands of criminals.” Well, someone with a valid Virginia permit who carries a pistol in D.C. is a criminal under D.C. law, and Pirro apparently means to prosecute them as vociferously as she would someone charged with armed robbery or carjacking.

As I pointed out in my earlier post, Pirro has already declared that, in her view, D.C.’s ban on openly carried long guns and possession of “large capacity” magazines violates the Second Amendment and violations by lawful D.C. gun owners won’t be prosecuted. If Pirro is willing to make a judgment call about the constitutionality of those statutes, then it stands to reason that she can do the same with D.C.’s lack of reciprocity… as well as its gun registration requirements.

And if Pirro wants to charge someone with a valid Virginia or Maryland carry permit simply for carrying an “unregistered” gun and ammunition in D.C., that suggests that she finds those statutes 2A-compliant; a position that puts her at odds with the 2A community and even Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon, who has suggested that a lack of reciprocity violates the Second Amendment.

That’s entirely true.

My initial hope over Pirro’s first round of comments was that she was misspeaking, which is what she’s basically saying happened, but the problem is that when she had a moment to take a breath and clarify things, she still doesn’t seem to understand that she didn’t exactly make things better.

As Cam points out, the fact that she’s said she wasn’t prosecuting certain gun laws in the district, but now is saying that she will prosecute these, means she thinks the registration requirement in place in the District of Columbia is perfectly constitutional, and that’s a massive problem for any gun rights advocate.

Registering guns is an anathema to the Second Amendment. We don’t register any other implements of our civil liberties, such as computers or Bibles. Why must people register guns with a hostile local government simply to exercise their right to keep and bear arms? As I recall, the district’s crime problem was never curbed by registration.

National Guard troops walking about seemed to help, but gun registration never did.

So why is Pirro suddenly defending that one?

I honestly don’t know, but I will say that I find it very alarming, especially in the wake of everything else we’ve heard from the Trump camp lately regarding the carrying of firearms.

All that Pirro’s comments and her insufficient walkback actually do is simply reinforce the idea that maybe the Trump administration isn’t as pro-gun as they let on during his first year back in office. While I think that’s a little extreme, I can see where some might wonder, and it damn sure didn’t help settle anyone’s nerves about where Trump and company stand on the Second Amendment.

In her X post, she told gun owners to put their safeties back on.

No, we won’t. We expect better out of an administration we helped return to the White House. We expected our rights to be respected, and while year one was great, we’re not exactly starting year two off on the right foot, and Pirro is part of that. She didn’t exactly smooth ruffled feathers as much as she thinks she did.

We don’t just expect better from the Trump administration; we demand it.

And that includes Pirro.
