Trump Wants SCOTUS to Squash Gun Rules

Trump Wants SCOTUS to Squash Gun Rules

In the wake of the Supreme Court’s Bruen decision, a lot of anti-gun states decided to enact a lot of new rules to try and mitigate what they claimed was or would be damage from that decision. Among the measures some enacted was a law that said private businesses were gun-free zones unless they expressly permitted people to carry guns.

Now, a lot of states have allowed businesses to opt to become gun-free zones. One of my unpopular gun opinions is that this is fine. My take is that private businesses have property rights, and they have the right to decide such a thing. Likewise, I appreciate when a business puts a sign on the door saying they don’t want my money.

But the measures in question go beyond that. They default to a business being a gun-free zone, which is ridiculous.

And Trump wants the Supreme Court to end that.

After the Supreme Court in 2022 made it harder to restrict who can arm themselves in public, some states took a different approach.

Five Democrat-led, mostly densely populous states passed laws that prohibit bringing a handgun onto someone else’s property without that person’s express consent.

Now the Trump administration wants the Supreme Court to declare that such rules in Hawaii, California, New York, Maryland and New Jersey violate the Constitution.

“The United States has a substantial interest in the preservation of the right to keep and bear arms and in the proper interpretation of the Second Amendment,” Solicitor General John Sauer wrote in explaining why the Department of Justice wants the high court to weigh in.

Now, the truth of the matter is that this whole measure is ridiculous. There’s no other example of a constitutionally protected right where the default position is that one is prohibited from expressing it in a business open to the public.

The Trump administration is right to want the Supreme Court to kill it.

But that’s far from the only measure the White House is looking to put an end to. Also listed in the above piece is that the administration has no interest in defending the handgun ban for adults under 21, which has always struck me as incredibly problematic. They’re also not interested in going after Missouri’s Second Amendment Preservation Act any longer, which is a big shock.

USA Today also noted that the Department of Justice is opposing so-called assault weapon bans in court.

Of course, the usual suspects are outraged. How dare the White House oppose gun regulations? I guess that in their minds, the White House should always oppose any attack on gun control. Well, tough.

I won’t say President Trump is perfect by any stretch of the imagination. However, at least in this term, he’s really stood by his word to support and defend the Second Amendment. He said no one would touch our guns, and he meant it.

That’s very good news.

It’s about time that the federal government actually stood behind our constitutionally protected right to keep and bear arms. Anti-gun groups are used to the feds being their lap dogs, and their outrage isn’t so much about guns but a shift in the status quo that allowed them to use their funding for other things.

Well, sucks to be them.

Editor’s Note: President Trump and Republicans across the country are doing everything they can to protect our Second Amendment rights and right to self-defense.
