US, Mexico Team Up to Combat Gun Trafficking Efforts

Mexico has tried its best to hold the United States and the firearm industry accountable for cartel violence. They even tried to destroy the gun industry via a lawsuit that was, thankfully, shut down by the Supreme Court; in a unanimous decision authored by Justice Elana Kagan, no less. 

However, there is a significant number of American guns ending up in cartel hands. While I’m quite sure they can find plenty of sources to supply them with weapons, I don’t like the idea that they’re getting any from here.

Now, the two nations are teaming up to try and shut the gun trafficking effort down.

The US State Department on Saturday announced a “historic” new bilateral initiative with Mexico aimed at cracking down on cross-border gun smuggling.

Mission Firewall will see Mexican authorities obtain access to US technology that is used to track and monitor illicit activity at the US-Mexican border.

The operation was launched at the first meeting of the US-Mexico Security Implementation Group, formed at the beginning of September during meetings between Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his Mexican counterpart Juan Ramon de la Fuente as an attempt to jointly combat drug trafficking and arms smuggling.

Both countries will work to improve collaboration on investigations and increase intelligence sharing, as well as assist one another in pursuing prosecutions.

US officials say they will also increase inspections to try and stem the tide of weapons heading south.

However, it should be noted that no matter what happens, if there’s a way to get people out of Mexico and into the United States, there will also be a way to use that same pipeline to get guns into Mexico. That includes the tunnels we’ve seen that run under the border that have been used to smuggle just about anything worth smuggling.

The cooperation is probably a good thing, especially if they work to keep everything from crossing the border that isn’t supposed to be crossed, though that wasn’t mentioned. Still, if nothing else, keeping US guns in the US should show people that the cartels have other ways to get firearms.

Then, maybe, we can start talking about a real effort to shut them down, rather than pretending that they’re nothing major.

And honestly, I’d rather keep guns here in the United States. We can buy and shoot them, then, versus them going to some jackwagon oppressing his own people in the name of the drug trade.

Of course, it would help if the ATF doesn’t try to engage in another Operation Fast & Furious at some point down the road, too, since that’s likely where a significant number of those guns originated.

As for this effort, let’s wait and see, though, before we get too excited. I suspect that the cartels will conveniently find out where the police are and use an alternate route to smuggle stuff in and out of the country.

Because it’s weird how often they seem to know what’s happening with law enforcement down there before it happens. It’s either they’re psychic or a mess of folks are on the take.

It couldn’t be the latter, now could it? I mean, it’s not like there’s a long history of corruption down there, is there?
