Virginia Moms Demand Action Chapter Should Get Used to Disappointment

No matter what the odds are, anti-gunners are going to push for gun control. However, in some states, that seems a lot more likely than in others.

Virginia is one of those states, unfortunately. As it stands, Gov. Glenn Youngkin is about the only thing standing in the way of anti-gunners.

And since he’s still in office, that’s kind of a big roadblock.

That kept a lot of gun control from actually becoming law last year, but rather than learn from their mistakes, Moms Demand Action wants pretty much the exact same legislation that got vetoed to somehow pass this year.

The Virginia chapter of Moms Demand Action is hosting a gun safety advocacy rally at Capitol Square on Wednesday morning.

The rally is scheduled for 9 a.m. at the Bell Tower.

“Building on last year’s bipartisan progress on gun safety, volunteers with Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action continue to lead the fight for lifesaving gun laws,” the group said in a press release.

Virginia lawmakers must work together to pass any meaningful legislation regarding guns, as both houses of the General Assembly are controlled by the Democrats and Gov. Glenn Youngkin is a Republican.

“We started last year, and we were able to pass some bipartisan bills. Although Governor Youngkin vetoed the majority of our gun safety bills, we’re back here today to continue to fight,” said organizer and Moms Demand Action volunteer Shantell Rock.

…

Virginia Citizens Defense League (VCDL) President and gun rights advocate Philip Van Cleave said in a statement that duplicate bills proposed by the Democrats are basically “virtue signaling.”

“Many of them have the same wording as bills that were vetoed last year and, consequently, we expect they will be vetoed again if they end up on the governor’s desk,” Van Cleave wrote in a statement.

Among the measures are an assault weapon ban and one that would bar guns for anyone convicted of a misdemeanor “hate crime.”

Of course, assault weapon bans have been non-starters for pro-gun officials for years, and the truth is that if a misdemeanor is so terrible that it should bar someone from exercising their right to keep and bear arms for life, then just why isn’t it a felony? I may not agree with every felony coming with that penalty either, but it’s a lot easier for me to swallow that this crime is just that terrible if they made it a felony in the first place, rather than just trying to expand the prohibitive offenses.

Last year, these resulted in vetoes by Youngkin.

Moms Demand Action folks are out of their minds if they think this year is any different. What’s more, this is an election year in Virginia, and every seat in the House (known as the Assembly in the state) is going to be on the ballot. I can’t imagine the continued beating of heads against the wall will do them any favors with the voters who would rather see them address some actual issues for a change.

They can hope all they want, but they should get used to disappointment.
