Walz Unleashes Anti-2A Agenda Targeting Lawful Gun Owners

As we reported on Monday, a Minnesota House committee is set to take up legislation banning the sale and possession of so-called assault weapons and “large capacity” magazines later today. Those bills are just the tip of Gov. Tim Walz’s spear aimed at the Second Amendment, however.

On Tuesday morning, Walz unveiled a legislative package that includes the aforementioned bans on modern sporting rifles and magazines that can hold more than ten rounds, as well as a tax on the sale of firearms and ammunition, a mandatory insurance requirement for gun owners, storage mandates, a “lost or stolen” requirement, and prohibitions on home-built and unserialized firearms.

“These are common sense measures,” Walz declared at a press conference where he was surrounded by DFL lawmakers and gun control activists.

“We know that these are concrete proposals that make a difference,” he continued. “We’ve proven to the rest of the world that Minnesota’s built differently. And I want to make this case that this legislative session, this is an opportunity to make Minnesota the safest state around gun violence while doing nothing to impinge on your Second Amendment rights.”

Banning commonly owned firearms and magazines doesn’t have an effect on the right to keep and bear arms? Making it more expensive to purchase firearms and ammunition won’t have any impact on gun owners? Requiring people purchase an insurance policy before exercising a fundamental civil right doesn’t implicate or complicate the exercise of our Second Amendment rights?

Tim Walz is a gibbering idiot if he believes that to be true, and he thinks Minnesota voters are fools if he expects them to take his statement as anything other than bold-faced lie.

Sadly, far too many of them will buy into his B.S. claims and fall in line to support his anti-2A initiatives. Success for the governor, though, is far from certain.

In addition to the gun control measures Walz talked about at his press conference, he’s also demanding an end to firearms preemption, which would allow localities to set their own gun control ordinances even more restrictive than state law; “creating standards of conduct for the marketing and sale of firearms and… allowing victims of gun violence an avenue to seek justice and compensation if those standards of conduct are violated”; a ban on binary triggers, and allowing public colleges and universities to ban firearm possession by visitors with a valid concealed carry permit.

Democrats have a one-seat majority in the state Senate, and the House is equally divided between Democrats and Republicans (with a Republican House Speaker). Walz can’t afford to lose more than one Democrat senator for his gun control package, and he’ll have to convince at least one House Republican to sign on even if every House Democrat votes in lockstep to advance his anti-civil rights agenda.

The House Public Safety Committee hearing on 2/24 signals that HF 3433 and HF 3402 are being taken seriously and could advance this session. These bills propose ‘assault weapon’ and magazine bans with no future transfers and no grandfather clause for magazines.

In order to get these bills to his desk, Walz and Democrats are going to argue that anyone opposed to their agenda must not care if kids are killed with a semi-automatic rifle. Walz is using the shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church last August as the impetus for his anti-gun agenda, and Democrats made sure the state capitol was filled with empty desks on Tuesday to symbolize the victims of “gun violence.”

The guns that Walz and his cohorts want to ban are the most popular rifles in the country and are rarely used in any violent crimes. When they are used by twisted individuals intent on ending innocent lives, of course that’s horrific. But it’s no less horrible when a deranged lunatic uses a shotgun, handgun, or a hammer. The evil comes from the individual’s acts, not the inanimate implement.

Minnesota Second Amendment advocates need to speak up loud and clear in opposition to Walz’s attempt to criminalize a civil right in the name of public safety, and all those new gun owners on the left in the Twin Cities need to get active in defending their rights now that they’ve decided to defend themselves with a firearm. How many of those gun owners actually become 2A activists remains to be seen, but Walz has made it abundantly clear that he’s coming after them too, and if they want to keep their newly exercised rights they’re going to have to stand up and protect them.

Editor’s Note: The radical left will stop at nothing to enact their radical gun control agenda and strip us of our Second Amendment rights.
