With Anti-Gunners, It’s Often What They Leave Out

With Anti-Gunners, It’s Often What They Leave Out

I get that not everyone agrees with us on guns. I can even accept that to some degree. People have their own interpretations of the facts, and sometimes, people are dumb.

It’s an inescapable fact of life, unfortunately.

But a lot of times, the anti-gun folks aren’t as stupid as we might like to believe. They know exactly what they’re doing. We know this not because of what they say, but what they omit in their push to infringe on our Second Amendment rights.

This op-ed out of Tallahassee is a prime example.

After the Nov. 2, 2018, shooting at Hot Yoga Tallahassee, I wrote to the Democrat about the need for more than thoughts and prayers and vowed to be more active in the fight against gun violence. In the seven years since then, I’ve left countless messages and sent many letters to my representatives urging them to support common sense gun laws at the local and national level.

I wish I could share something inspiring and uplifting about how my efforts have made a positive impact, but instead here is what my last few years of gun sense advocacy have actually gotten me:

  • An inbox full of generic email responses from the office of Rick Scott touting his commitment to protecting the Second Amendment.
  • My elementary school child telling me a peer told them they were going to “bring a gun to school to shoot them.”
  • Memories of helping Florida State University students and family members at the hospital after yet another mass shooting on the campus.
  • The ability to carry concealed weapons and firearms without background checks, training or a concealed license.
  • Tax-free holidays for firearms, firearm accessories, and ammunition.
  • Open carry and Second Amendment auditors in our community.

Oh, and a reduction in violent crime that even the once dangerous Miami has noticed, and that the city’s mayor credits to gun rights expansions in the state.

That got left out for some shocking reason.

I guess that doesn’t fit the author’s narrative, though. And while the author makes a claim about how there’s a gun death every 11 minutes, she also fails to note that violent crime is down across the nation from the spike we saw in 2020. That doesn’t fit, either.

Then we get to this bit:

This year, several bills have been filed for Florida’s 2026 legislative session to prevent gun related deaths and injuries:

  • SB 256: Storage of Handguns in Private Conveyances and Vessels
  • 80SB : Safe Storage of Firearms and Ammunition in Motor Vehicles and Vessels
  • HB 41: Sales of Ammunition
  • HB 63: Carrying a Handgun, Weapon, or Firearm

These bills make sense and are not infringing on Second Amendment rights – they are simply trying to prevent needless harm and should not be partisan issues.

HB 41 requires background checks for all ammunition sales, something that hasn’t been shown to do anything anywhere except to make it harder for law-abiding citizens to get ammunition for training or self-defense purposes.

HB 63 is all about gun-free zones, which would-be mass shooters absolutely love.

SB 80 and SB 256 are all about punishing people who have their guns stolen out of their vehicles because it wasn’t stored in a certain manner.

Each and every one of these is, in fact, an infringement on people’s Second Amendment rights. I don’t care what anti-gunners try to claim, but again, they omit the fact that not only are these infringements, but they want infringements. They don’t actually value the Second Amendment because it stands in the way of the disarmed society they dream of.

OK, on that one, she flat-out lied about the infringement aspect, but maybe she’s dumb enough to actually believe it, so then she’s just wrong and an idiot.

It could go either way or be a combination of both.

Regardless, the truth of the matter is that anti-gunners cannot win in a world where everyone has all of the facts. That’s why so many of them are part of the mainstream media. Then they can control what facts people get piped into their homes.

But Florida has shown a bit more spine than the author might like. While the legislature hasn’t been as pro-gun as I might like, since the lapse in judgment following Parkland, they’ve at least been anti-gun control.

However, let’s understand that people like the author are going to step up and do their best to make these laws go through. It’s up to our Floridian friends to reach out to their lawmakers to oppose these bills, and it’s up to us to support them.
