Yeah, Those New York Gun Control Laws are Working Just Great

Yeah, Those New York Gun Control Laws are Working Just Great

There’s a very old saying that I first saw on a bumper sticker decades ago. It read, “If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.” At the time, I really didn’t grasp the full meaning of that. Were they saying that guns being outlawed would turn people into outlaws? Were they saying criminals would still have guns?

It took me a while to realize that, whether it was intended to or not, it was kind of saying both.

Gun control laws turn some people into criminals because they’re simply done playing along, and criminals are going to ignore them at every opportunity.

And in a state like New York, this is what you find.

The New Rochelle Police Department announced the raid as the successful conclusion of a monthslong investigation by their Special Investigations Unit and the Westchester County District Attorney investigators. During the probe, a Cooper Drive address was identified as a hub for the assembly and distribution of non-serialized firearms, or “ghost guns.”

…

In the search, detectives recovered a loaded 1911-style ghost gun .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol, a loaded Sig Sauer-style ghost gun 9mm semi-automatic pistol, two AR-15/AR-4 lower receivers with no serial numbers, two high-capacity pistol magazines, five ghost gun pistols in various stages of assembly, approximately 150 rounds of ammunition and gun parts used for firearm fabrication, according to NRPD.

So multiple so-called ghost guns, including two AR-15 lower receivers–the part that is considered a gun under federal law–which were both “ghost guns” and “assault weapons” in the eyes of the state–and a couple of illegal magazines, all despite all of them being illegal under state law.

Allegedly, at least. It’s possible this is all made up–the Adamiak story keeps reminding me of that–but let’s assume that the guns themselves are what’s reported for the sake of argument, shall we?

Anyway, these guns all seem to violate the strict gun control laws enacted by the state, which proponents claimed would make everyone safer. Yet the fact that these weapons exist at all gives lie to that claim. The fact that they exist outside of the legal trade of firearms means that they’re not intended for law-abiding citizens, but those who have decided to be the outlaws I mentioned above.

What those laws mean, though, is that while the outlaws have these kinds of guns, the law-abiding don’t. They can’t meet the same kind of threats they might face, which means the laws specifically hurt those law-abiding folks.

This isn’t rocket science. It’s obvious to anyone who cares to look.

While other laws might infringe on people doing things that don’t hurt anyone else, very few of those laws actually endanger those who follow the law. Banning the use of illegal drugs doesn’t put me in danger because I can’t buy cocaine. Banning prostitution doesn’t put me in danger because I can’t sell my body–and we all know that everyone wants to pay for some of this, right?

But restricting guns does just that. It means I can’t carry 15 rounds in my magazine in some places. It means I can’t have certain firearms that I might need to meet a particular threat.

The bad guys, though?

They have it all.

When even some guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have those guns.

Editor’s Note: We know that gun control laws do nothing to stop criminals, but we also know the gun control lobby won’t stop until our Second Amendment rights have been eradicated.
