Australian authorities have charged a 13-year-old Chinese exchange student with the murder of a fellow Chinese exchange student, 14, following a fatal stabbing incident late Monday night in the Newcastle suburb of Edgeworth, as reported by The New York Post.

New South Wales Police responded to a call at a home on Euston Close around 10:20 p.m. Monday night after receiving reports of a stabbing. Upon arrival, officers found a 14-year-old girl with a single stab wound to the torso.

She was treated at the scene by paramedics before being transported to a local hospital in critical condition. Despite medical efforts, she later succumbed to her injuries.

The younger girl, also a participant in the exchange program, was taken into custody and charged with one count of murder. She is scheduled to appear before a Children’s Court on Wednesday.

Superintendent Tracy Chapman, Commander of the Lake Macquarie Police District, confirmed that both girls were from China and had arrived in Australia just over a week earlier as part of a student exchange program.

They were staying with the same host family, comprised of a man and a woman, and were attending a local school while visiting sites throughout the Hunter Region.

According to Chapman, “They arrived in Australia eight days ago and were expected to depart Australia on the 16th of August.” She noted that New South Wales Police are coordinating with the program facilitators to ensure all appropriate protocols and notifications are being followed.

Police said the girls had separate bedrooms in the home, and the incident occurred after all individuals in the residence had gone to their rooms for the night. One of the hosts reportedly heard a disturbance and, upon investigation, discovered the injured 14-year-old.

Chapman stated that authorities are still trying to determine the nature of the relationship between the two girls. “At this stage, we’re not aware of any relationship between them or any history, but that’s part of the investigation,” she said.

A kitchen knife believed to have been used in the incident was recovered by police.

Language barriers have complicated the investigation. Police are working closely with Chinese consular officials to navigate the legal and diplomatic aspects of the case.

The investigation remains ongoing, and officials have not released the names of either girl due to their ages.
