On Tuesday, during a broadcast of NewsNation’s “Cuomo,” Rep. Brad Sherman (D-CA) addressed the ongoing concerns over California’s Medicaid shortfall and provided his perspective on the state’s fiscal health and immigration policies.

Despite facing challenges, including a dip in the stock market, Sherman asserted that California remains in a stable position.

When asked about the state’s Medicaid shortfall, Sherman remained confident, stating, “California’s fine.”

He explained that the state’s reliance on taxing wealthy individuals and capital gains has been a major source of revenue but acknowledged that a downturn in the stock market could negatively impact the state’s financial outlook over the next decade.

“The depression in the stock market will hurt California over the next ten years,” he said.

Sherman also took the opportunity to address concerns surrounding the state’s healthcare provisions, particularly regarding illegal aliens.

He stated that providing Medicaid, or Medi-Cal as it is called in California, to illegal aliens is crucial for public health reasons.

He emphasized that not providing healthcare to everyone, including undocumented individuals, could lead to widespread health issues.

“You cannot treat a family by only treating some family members,” Sherman explained.

“If you don’t treat COVID in a woman without documents, then our children who are U.S. citizens are going to get COVID, and that’s going to be much, much worse.”

Sherman’s comments come as some critics have pointed to the costs associated with extending Medicaid to illegal aliens.

However, Sherman strongly rejected the idea that illegal aliens were solely responsible for California’s financial challenges.

He referred to such claims as “simply absurd” and assured viewers that California would continue to ensure the health and wellbeing of its residents, regardless of immigration status.

“California’s going to do fine,” Sherman stated. “And we’re going to make sure that the people who live in California [are] healthy.”

Sherman also clarified that not every illegal alien automatically qualifies for Medicaid in California.

He explained that Medi-Cal eligibility does not automatically extend to all illegal aliens, but the state does make provisions to ensure that essential healthcare services are available, particularly to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.

“We do make sure that the people who live in the city of Los Angeles have the basic health care that they need so that we all don’t get infectious diseases,” he added.

Despite the state’s Medicaid shortfall and the financial pressures California faces due to a reliance on wealthy residents’ capital gains taxes, Sherman’s remarks reflect his belief that ensuring healthcare access to all residents, including illegal aliens, is essential for the state’s future stability.

As the discussion continues around California’s Medicaid funding and healthcare provisions, Sherman’s defense of the state’s policies underscores the challenges of balancing financial sustainability with the goal of maintaining public health for all residents.

The ongoing debate over how to fund healthcare for illegal aliens remains a central issue as California grapples with its financial future.
