Local law enforcement officials are denying claims that they were assigned by the Secret Service to cover the rooftop from where an attempted assassin fired at former President Donald Trump during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania last month.
Testifying before Congress, Acting Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe stated that local police snipers were positioned inside a nearby building and could have spotted the attacker, Thomas Matthew Crooks if they had remained at their post.

A map provided to Senator Chuck Grassley’s office shows the area of responsibility for the Beaver County Emergency Services Unit, who were assisting the Secret Service on that day. The map clearly indicates that the rooftop was not within their designated coverage area.
Senator Grassley has written a letter to Director Rowe, seeking further clarification on whether local law enforcement was indeed assigned to monitor the rooftop.
He also requested additional information regarding a site briefing that local law enforcement claims never took place, but Rowe insists it did occur.
Furthermore, Grassley inquired whether the Secret Service had any prior visual contact with Crooks before he opened fire. Rowe maintained that Secret Service snipers did not see Crooks on the rooftop before the incident, a claim that is now under dispute, as a video from one of the injured victims shows someone running along the rooftop.

Grassley’s letter included a deadline of August 16 for Director Rowe to respond, which was followed by the 8 bullet points below.
- Please provide a site diagram making clear where all local and federal law enforcement counter snipers were positioned and their assigned coverage areas, along with the shooter’s positions throughout the day.
- Do the photographs and diagrams referenced above conflict with Secret Service records regarding how local snipers were supposed to be positioned and how the AGR building was supposed to be covered? Please explain and provide all records.
- Describe, in detail, how the Beaver County and Butler County counter sniper teams were assigned to their positions on the second floor of the AGR complex and their respective coverage areas. Did the Secret Service assign or approve the location of the counter snipers in the AGR complex? If so, when, who and how was the instruction given?
- Do any Secret Service records indicate that the local counter snipers were supposed to be located inside, and not outside, the AGR building? Provide all records.
- Regarding your testimony, who told Secret Service that the building “was going to be covered”? Who took part in the “face to face” meeting that you referenced?
- Did Secret Service walk through and survey the AGR building as part of its advance security plan prior to the July 13 event? If so, describe when and list all local, state, and federal law enforcement present. If not, why not?
- Did Secret Service walk through and survey the AGR building as part of its advance security plan prior to the July 13 event? If so, describe when and list all local, state, and federal law enforcement present. If not, why not?
- Did any federal law enforcement personnel assigned to the July 13 event see a person on the roof of the AGR building at any point prior to the gunman opening fire? If so, which agency? Please explain in detail and with timestamps.
Despite nearly a month passing since the assassination attempt on July 13, many questions remain unanswered regarding how the Secret Service failed to secure the building from which the assailant fired at Trump, almost resulting in his death being broadcast live on television.
