Comedian and commentator Adam Carolla criticized the Los Angeles Unified School District during a recent discussion about the district’s growing financial burden tied to sexual misconduct lawsuits involving teachers.
The issue has gained attention after the LAUSD school board approved additional borrowing to cover claims tied to sexual abuse allegations.
According to a report referenced during a television segment, the district is issuing hundreds of millions of dollars in bonds to pay settlements connected to lawsuits filed against the school system.

During a news clip cited in the discussion, an ABC 7 host described the district’s financial situation and the impact of new litigation tied to abuse claims.
“Okay, LA Unified School Board is borrowing another $250 million in bonds to settle claims of sexual misconduct. These latest bonds are in addition to the $500 million authorized less than a year ago. This is, according to according to the LA Times, the extra money is needed because of a bill that extended the statute of limitations for filing civil lawsuits regarding childhood sexual abuse, the total cost, including financing, is expected to exceed a billion dollars. The money will be paid out of the district’s general fund over the next decade or so.”
The borrowing comes after California lawmakers extended the statute of limitations for civil claims involving childhood sexual abuse, allowing victims to pursue lawsuits that previously would have been barred by time limits.
The extension has triggered a wave of legal actions against institutions across the state, including public school districts.

LAUSD had already authorized $500 million in borrowing to address claims tied to teacher misconduct before approving the additional $250 million in bonds referenced in the ABC 7 report.
According to the report cited during the discussion, the total cost of settlements and financing tied to the claims could exceed $1 billion over time.
Carolla responded to the news segment by arguing that the district’s ongoing legal exposure reflects deeper structural problems within the school system.
“There was this big thing with the LAUSD school board, where there’s like a billion dollars. They’re constantly being sued because they have these pedophile teachers, and they can’t get rid of them because the union, the school board, union, the teachers union, so powerful that they literally can’t fire horrible teachers and ones that get caught pedophilia.”
Carolla also alleged that teachers accused of misconduct have sometimes been transferred within the system instead of removed from their positions.
“So they take them and they shift them to the shitty neighborhoods where the people don’t complain, like speak Spanish mostly. And the kids, you know, mom and dad work all day, they literally take the shit teachers and they ship them off to where the poor people. Church used to send bad priests to Arizona, right?”
He continued by describing what he sees as a system that allows misconduct to continue while limiting the ability of families to challenge it.
“And then they continue, except for now, with people that can’t lawyer up sort of situation. But I was, and I’ll play the clip, the news clip, and I’ll and then I’ll tell you my solution.”
The financial consequences of the lawsuits have become a major issue for the district as it works to manage the cost of settlements and legal claims.
Carolla also criticized what he described as a broader trend of government agencies increasing taxes or borrowing to cover large financial liabilities rather than addressing underlying problems.
“By the way, I love that notion that we just got to raise taxes so we can cover all these expenses. Like, how about we reel it in a little with the molestation and the lawsuits and the bullet train to nowhere and the fraud and the daycares and all of that. How about we tighten our belt a little bit instead of asking everyone for fucking more money every 10 seconds?”

The LAUSD system is one of the largest public school districts in the United States, serving hundreds of thousands of students across Los Angeles.
The financial strain caused by the lawsuits is expected to affect the district’s budget for years, as the borrowed funds and associated financing costs will be repaid from the district’s general fund over roughly the next decade.
According to the report referenced in the discussion, the combined cost of settlements and financing tied to the sexual misconduct claims could exceed $1 billion.
