Comedian and commentator Adam Carolla criticized California Gov. Gavin Newsom and state lawmakers while discussing recent efforts to investigate alleged fraud in state programs, raising concerns about the response from officials.
Carolla’s remarks focused on reporting tied to Nick Shirley, who has been examining alleged fraud involving child care and hospice services in California.
According to Carolla, those investigations have identified issues involving the use of taxpayer funds, prompting public attention.

Carolla said the response from the governor’s office raised questions about how state leadership is addressing the allegations.
“I’m really starting to lose a little bit of faith, like Nick Shirley’s going after all the fraud here, right?” Carolla said.
“He set his sights on California, right?”
He continued by describing the scope of the claims being investigated.
“And so of course, he’s uncovering all the child care fraud and all the hospice fraud.”

Carolla then referenced a message from the governor’s office directed at Shirley.
“And then last night, we got to get a tweet from the governor’s office making fun of Nick Shirley, you know what I mean?”
He said the reaction led him to reconsider his view of how state officials approach governance.
“And it’s like, I’m now starting to realize I think we had a thing like a parent like, like you have with your spouse where you go, like, when I used to try to talk my ex into buying healthy food for the kids, and she just doubled down on pizza and junk.”
Carolla continued by comparing the situation to a personal experience.
“But she was just doing it because I wanted her to do it at you, right? She was doing it at me.”
He added that despite disagreements in that situation, he still believed there was underlying concern.
“But I mean, is as much sh*t as she was feeding those kids, and as much as I was begging her to make them eggs instead of Eggos, I still would have said she is. She does care very much about the kids, and she is thinking about the kids, and she does love the kids.”
Carolla said that perspective no longer applies in his view of California’s leadership.
“She’s just approaching it in a way that’s detrimental to the kids, like, ironically, but she really loves the kids.”
He continued by questioning whether current officials are acting with similar intent.
“I don’t know what I think anymore about Newsom or California the legislature, like, I don’t even know if they like it anymore.”
Carolla said previous disagreements were based on differing approaches rather than intent.
“Like, we used to have a thing where it’s like, look, we both love California.”
He added, “We want what’s best for the country and for California.”
Carolla said that distinction has changed in his view.
“We’re just having different ways of approaching it.”
He concluded by describing his concerns about the direction of state policy and leadership response to fraud allegations.
“Everything they’re doing is destructive. So I don’t know if they do, yeah, you know what I mean?”
Carolla pointed to the focus of the investigations and the use of public funds.
“Like, here’s a guy who’s uncovering fraud in your state, wasting billions of taxpayer dollars, and you’re attacking him.”
