North Carolina authorities are searching for Nikia Monique Thompson, the niece of New York Attorney General Letitia James, after confirming an active Order for Arrest remains in effect, as reported by The Gateway Pundit.

Thompson, listed by the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction as an “Absconder” (offender number 0898340), is accused of violating probation and has an extensive criminal record spanning two decades.

Thompson’s warrant, first issued in 2012, does not expire and remains valid under state law.

According to records, she has been convicted on charges including contributing to the delinquency of a minor, abuse of a child, possession of burglary tools, third-degree larceny, assault and battery, trespassing, shoplifting, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, possession of marijuana, driving with a suspended license, and malicious conduct while incarcerated.

Investigators now believe Thompson is hiding at James’s primary residence in Norfolk, Virginia. This development raises the question of whether James will comply with law enforcement efforts to apprehend her niece or face accusations of harboring a fugitive.

Thompson’s personal connections to James appear to be longstanding. On her LinkedIn profile, Thompson wrote, “Been working with Ms James for years, from council member to Public Advocate to Attorney General.”

If James is found to be providing shelter for her fugitive niece, she could face both state and federal consequences.

Virginia law (VA Code § 18.2-472) establishes penalties for harboring an escaped offender, classifying it as a Class 1 misdemeanor punishable by up to 12 months in jail and a $2,500 fine.

In addition, because Thompson is accused of crossing state lines to avoid prosecution, federal law (18 U.S.C. § 1073) could apply. Federal harboring statutes carry a penalty of up to five years in prison.

This is not the first time questions have been raised about James’s relationship with her niece and her family. Previous reporting noted that James defended her decision to provide housing assistance to relatives, describing it as an act of support.

However, critics argue that providing shelter for individuals with significant criminal histories — particularly one with an active arrest warrant — crosses into potential obstruction of justice.

President Donald Trump highlighted the case on Truth Social last week, drawing attention to the situation and raising further political stakes for James.

The case remains active, with North Carolina authorities confirming that the warrant for Thompson is enforceable and that efforts to locate and arrest her are ongoing. Whether Letitia James will cooperate with law enforcement to surrender her niece remains to be seen.
