Attorney General Pam Bondi said Sunday that the Afghan national accused of shooting two National Guard troops in Washington, D.C., “should have never been in our country,” describing failures in federal vetting procedures and warning of broader national-security risks, as reported by Breitbart.

Bondi made the comments during an appearance on Fox News Sunday with host Martha MacCallum.

The discussion centered on the background of the suspect, who arrived in the United States in 2021 after previously working with the CIA in Afghanistan and entering through Operation Allies Welcome.

Pam Bondi, a former Attorney General of Florida, appearing at the Conservative Political Action Conference, CPAC 2024, at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center on Feb 23, 2024.

MacCallum referenced reporting from The Washington Post claiming counterterrorism officials had vetted the suspect twice — once years earlier, during his work with the CIA, and again before his entry into the United States in 2021.

MacCallum asked whether the vetting process failed or whether the suspect “was possibly radicalized once he got here.”

Bondi said the suspect had entered the country under Operation Allies Welcome with what she described as “minimal to little vetting.”

She said she had spoken the night before with Secretary Kristi Noem about the vetting procedures used during that program.

“They did not do biometrics. They did not do social media. They did very little, if minimal vetting on all of these people,” Bondi said.

Bondi also pointed to a broader backlog facing federal authorities. “We have a 1.5 million backlog of people that have come into our country,” she said, adding concerns about individuals being radicalized after arrival.

Regarding the D.C. shooting, Bondi said, “We know that this shooter who shot our National Guardsmen in D.C. the day before Thanksgiving, he was radicalized. You’re going to hear a lot more about that.”

Bondi argued that the suspect’s presence in the United States reflected broader failures in immigration enforcement. “These people should not have been in our country, should have never been in our country under Joe Biden,” Bondi said.

She also referenced a recent arrest involving a gang member.

“He opened our borders, of course. MS-13 TDA members. Twenty minutes from where you are right now, Shannon, we caught one of the worst MS-13 members in the country of the whole Eastern Seaboard, top members, because Joe Biden let him walk into our country,” she said.

Federal officials have not yet released additional information on the suspect’s path into the country beyond what has been previously reported. The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
