Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., is reportedly weighing a run for president in 2028, according to a Friday report from Axios.

The self-described democratic socialist and member of the progressive “Squad” has been expanding her political profile nationally and in her home state as she considers her next move, as reported by The New York Post.

People familiar with her operation told Axios that Ocasio-Cortez and her team are assessing whether her future lies in a Senate run or a presidential campaign. While no formal decision has been made, her advisers are working to ensure she has multiple options available.

Ocasio-Cortez, who represents parts of Queens and the Bronx, has increased her national visibility this year. She joined Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., on his “Fighting Oligarchy” tour and has held a series of town halls across upstate New York.

Sen. Bernie Sanders speaks to the crowd duirng his “Fighting Oligarchy” speaking event Saturday, Feb. 22, 2025 at The Englert Theatre in Iowa City, Iowa.

According to the report, she has also invested millions in building her social media presence and compiling a national list of potential supporters and donors to expand her grassroots fundraising network.

Some of her allies reportedly believe that even if she doubts her ability to secure the Democratic nomination, she may still enter the race to ensure the progressive wing of the party has influence in the primary.

The strategy would mirror Sanders’ 2016 campaign, which challenged former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and pushed the Democratic platform further left.

A presidential run is not the only option on the table.

Ocasio-Cortez could potentially challenge Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., for one of New York’s two Senate seats. Schumer, who won a fifth Senate term in 2022, has not yet announced whether he intends to seek re-election.

A Sanders aide dismissed suggestions that Ocasio-Cortez could not compete in a national primary. “She has a supporter base that, in many ways, has a larger potential width than Bernie’s,” Ari Rabin-Havt told Axios.

“She has been in the glare of the spotlight from day one and has the national campaigning experience a lot of other potential candidates are now trying to get.”

Ocasio-Cortez first rose to prominence in 2018 after defeating longtime Democratic Rep. Joe Crowley in a primary. Since then, she has advanced a range of progressive priorities, including universal health care and the Green New Deal.

Positioning herself as a frequent critic of President Donald Trump, she has opposed Israel’s war in Gaza and has consistently spoken against the deportation of illegal migrants.

She has also clashed at times with Democratic leadership, including a recent instance where she criticized Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., for declining to endorse Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee for New York City mayor.

Neither Ocasio-Cortez’s congressional office nor her campaign has commented on the Axios report.
