Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier proposed a controversial new idea this week to address the ongoing illegal immigration crisis: constructing a detention facility deep in the Everglades, surrounded by natural barriers such as alligators and pythons.

In a video posted to X, Uthmeier unveiled his proposal for what he called “Alligator Alcatraz,” referencing the now-closed maximum-security prison once located on Alcatraz Island in California’s San Francisco Bay.

Uthmeier said the Everglades location presents “an efficient, low cost opportunity to build a temporary detention facility because you don’t need to invest that much in the perimeter.”

He explained, “If people get out, there’s not much waiting for them other than alligators and pythons.”

“Nowhere to go. Nowhere to hide,” Uthmeier added in the video, suggesting that the project could be operational within 30 to 60 days of breaking ground.

He said the facility would be able to house up to 1,000 individuals at a time.

Uthmeier stated that the initiative would require cooperation from both Miami-Dade and Collier counties, which border parts of the Everglades.

“This presents a great opportunity for the state of Florida to work with Miami-Dade and Collier counties,” he said.

“Alligator Alcatraz. We’re ready to go.”

He also noted that the proposed site is adjacent to an airstrip, which could be used to transport detainees directly to the facility.

The proposal comes amid continued focus by Florida officials on illegal immigration enforcement.

The DeSantis administration has taken a hardline stance in recent years, deploying state resources to border states, enhancing penalties for human smuggling, and signing legislation requiring employers to use E-Verify.

Last month, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis commented on immigration policy during an interview with Townhall, arguing that even some non-Republican voters are frustrated with the Democratic Party’s handling of border security.

“Some of these voters, they may not have been Republicans, but they look at the Democrats as just being so far off the reservation with respect to illegal immigration,” DeSantis said.

He criticized House Democrats for voting against the Laken Riley Act and opposing mandatory deportations for violent criminal offenders.

“They [Democrats] voted against the Laken Riley Act. They will vote against mandatory deportations of very serious criminals,” DeSantis said.

“I think there’s a lot of voters out there that may agree with the Democrats on some other issues, but on this one, they’re just so far off the reservation…I think that’s one of the reasons why the Democratic Party’s brand is in the toilet.”

The Laken Riley Act, named after a Georgia nursing student who was murdered earlier this year, seeks to require the detention of illegal immigrants who commit certain criminal offenses.

The bill passed in the U.S. House of Representatives but faced strong opposition from House Democrats.

While Uthmeier’s “Alligator Alcatraz” concept has not yet advanced beyond the proposal stage, it marks another high-profile move by Florida officials in response to federal immigration policies.
