An American Airlines flight from John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York to Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi was forced to make an emergency diversion to Rome on Sunday after a reported bomb threat.

Dennis Quaid’s #1 Warning for Americans

The aircraft was escorted by Italian fighter jets as it landed at Leonardo da Vinci Airport.

The incident occurred aboard American Airlines Flight 292, which was carrying 199 passengers and 15 crew members.

The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner was approximately two hours from its destination when it abruptly changed course over Turkmenistan, turning back toward Europe due to what the airline described as a “possible security issue.”

Passengers on board became aware of the situation when the captain made an announcement about the diversion.

“I felt a little panic of, OK, what’s going on here?” said Neeraj Chopra, a passenger traveling from Detroit, Michigan, to visit family in India.

The Italian Air Force later confirmed that the plane had been diverted due to a possible bomb threat.

As a precautionary measure, two Italian Eurofighter Typhoon jets were scrambled to escort the aircraft as it made its way to Rome.

Images circulating on social media showed the American Airlines jet flanked by the Italian warplanes as it approached its emergency landing site.

The flight, which had originally departed JFK at around 8:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, finally landed in Rome at approximately 11:15 a.m. ET on Sunday.

In total, passengers spent 21 hours and 40 minutes on board before disembarking.

“It was definitely the longest flight to Europe I’ve ever taken,” said Jonathan Bacon, a 22-year-old passenger from Dayton, Ohio.

After landing, all passengers were transferred to buses and taken to the terminal, where they and their luggage underwent additional security screenings.

Some travelers reported waiting more than two hours to retrieve their checked baggage.

“Safety and security are our top priorities and we thank our customers for their understanding,” American Airlines said in a statement.

“We are working closely with local authorities and will provide updates as the situation develops.”

The bomb threat remains under investigation, and it is unclear whether any arrests have been made in connection to the incident.

This latest security scare comes just weeks after another American Airlines flight was delayed for nearly five hours in Texas after a passenger’s Wi-Fi hotspot was named, “There is a bomb on the flight.”

As authorities continue their investigation, American Airlines has not yet provided details on how or when passengers will continue their journey to India.
