Andrew Cuomo Slams Zohran Mamdani for Holding Rent-Stabilized Unit Despite Wealth ‘Time to Move Out’

Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is calling on Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani to vacate his rent-stabilized apartment in Astoria, arguing that the space should be available for low-income New Yorkers in need of affordable housing, as reported by Breitbart.

Cuomo, who is running as an independent candidate for New York City mayor, made the remarks in a post on X.

He cited Mamdani’s financial standing, noting that the assemblyman and his wife have substantial incomes, have held weddings on three continents, and own property abroad.

“Somewhere last night in New York City, a single mother and her children slept at a homeless shelter because you, Assemblyman @ZohranKMamdani, are occupying her rent-controlled apartment,” Cuomo wrote.

“You grew up rich and married an even wealthier woman. You’ve had weddings on three continents. You own property in LGTBQIA+ murderous Uganda. You make $142,000 a year plus stipends, and your wife works too, meaning you together likely make well over $200,000.”

Cuomo pointed to Mamdani’s own admission during a recent Democratic mayoral primary debate that he pays $2,300 a month for a one-bedroom apartment in Astoria, while Cuomo himself pays $7,800.

Cuomo argued that such units should be reserved for those in financial need, particularly during what he described as a “historic affordability crisis.”

“Leaders must show moral clarity,” Cuomo continued. “Time to move out.”

Cuomo’s post also referenced an interview Mamdani gave to The New York Editorial Board in February, in which the assemblyman confirmed he lives in rent-stabilized housing.

When asked if he would impose a rent freeze, Mamdani responded that if he were able to do so, he would not live in a rent-stabilized apartment but instead “on the Upper East Side, in a new apartment.”

Mamdani explained that when he moved into the apartment, he was earning $47,000 as a foreclosure prevention housing counselor for Chhaya CDC in Richmond Hill and Jackson Heights.

He said he found the apartment through StreetEasy and was unaware it was rent-stabilized at the time. Mamdani stated that he now has the means to move and does not plan to remain there indefinitely.

Breitbart News previously reported that Mamdani is the son of Indian-American film director Mira Nair and Columbia University Marxist scholar Mahmood Mamdani.

Reports have detailed that he spent part of his childhood on movie sets and has faced criticism for altering his accent depending on his audience.

In February, Mamdani and his wife, illustrator Rama Duwaji, traveled to Uganda for a wedding celebration at his family’s private compound.

The public exchange comes as New York City continues to face significant housing shortages and rising costs, with debates over who should benefit from rent-stabilized housing becoming a flashpoint in the mayoral race.
