Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo criticized the Democratic Party’s far-left wing this week, warning that its growing influence has created a climate of political paralysis in major cities run entirely by Democrats.

Speaking candidly, Cuomo pointed to urban decay, rising homelessness, and public safety concerns as direct consequences of weak leadership too afraid to challenge activist demands.

Cuomo, a Democrat himself, warned that the party’s leadership has become hostage to the most extreme factions within its ranks.

“And that far left is so intense and so active and so strong, you better not get on the wrong side of them,” Cuomo said.

“Because they will threaten you, and they will threaten you in a primary, and they’re very strong in a primary, because you have that low turnout, and they are the activists.”

According to Cuomo, this activist pressure has led to legislative gridlock and a refusal to take meaningful action unless it meets far-left ideological standards.

“So it’s a paralysis, the unless it’s perfect, right?” Cuomo said.

“The perfect is the enemy of the good. Unless it’s perfect, we’re not going to do it, and we’re going to side with the advocate advocacy community opposition whenever we can, and we get absolutely nothing done.”

Cuomo criticized the resulting inaction and warned that the deteriorating quality of life in Democrat-run cities is impossible to ignore.

“You see a deterioration of conditions, and people say, why? And you’re all Democrats,” Cuomo said.

“And I went to Los Angeles, and all I saw were blue tarps everywhere, and homeless living under bridges, et cetera. And I’m afraid to walk down the street, and it’s all Democrats who are in charge, and there’s no one else to blame.”

He dismissed intra-party blame-shifting as ineffective and unproductive.

“It’s you,” Cuomo said of Democratic leaders.

“And you want to point fingers internally. That does nothing for me. It’s still you, and that’s what you have to fix.”

Cuomo’s remarks come as major cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, and New York continue to grapple with surging homelessness, drug use in public spaces, and rising crime.

All are governed by Democratic mayors and city councils, and the issues have become a growing political liability for the party nationally.

While Cuomo’s relationship with the party establishment has been strained since his resignation in 2021, his comments reflect a broader frustration among moderate Democrats and independents who have voiced concern over urban mismanagement and a lack of pragmatic governance.

As Democrats look ahead to upcoming elections, Cuomo’s critique adds pressure on party leaders to confront the internal divide between mainstream voters and progressive activists.
