A New Orleans City Council meeting was brought to a halt Thursday after a group of approximately 30 protesters disrupted proceedings while demanding restrictions on Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity within the city.

The disruption escalated to the point that police intervened and forcibly removed several individuals from the chamber.

Council President J.P. Morrell suspended public comments after repeated outbursts from protesters who urged council members to declare public property “ICE free” zones.

Morrell attempted to continue the meeting before the interruption intensified.

“Alright, at this time, I’m gonna suspend public comment on this item,” he said, prompting a loud reaction from the group.

As the shouting grew, officers entered the meeting room to escort protesters outside.

According to Nola.com, several individuals resisted removal, resulting in pushing and physical struggles as officers attempted to clear the chamber.

One protester, identified as Toni Jones, was carried out of the building by her arms and legs after refusing to comply with police instructions.

The protest was a direct response to an ongoing federal immigration enforcement effort known as “Catahoula Crunch,” launched by the Department of Homeland Security in the New Orleans area.

The operation is being led by U.S. Customs and Border Protection commander-at-large Greg Bovino, with more than 200 federal agents deployed to locate and arrest individuals with criminal records who are in the country unlawfully.

Bovino released details of several arrests connected to the operation in a post on X.

He reported that agents apprehended an illegal Vietnamese national convicted of aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon, aggravated sexual assault with a deadly weapon, and aggravated kidnapping with a deadly weapon.

Additional arrests included a Honduran national with prior charges of domestic abuse child endangerment, driving while intoxicated, and resisting an officer, along with a Dominican national arrested on cocaine possession charges, according to DHS.

Inside the council chambers, protesters demanded action to restrict federal activity in the city, calling for a policy that would ban agents from accessing city-owned parking lots, vacant land, and garages for civil immigration enforcement purposes.

Demonstrators held signs that read “Silence supports deportation,” “No collaboration with ICE/DHS,” and “Immigrants Built + Rebuilt This City.”

Council members attempted to move forward with the scheduled agenda, but the sustained shouting made it impossible to continue discussion.

Officers eventually cleared the meeting room, allowing the council to resume its session after the disruption had ended.

🚨 HOLY SMOKES! Leftists caused a HUGE altercation at the New Orleans council meeting, fuming that ICE is allowed in the city.

Police had to FORCIBLY get involved, shoving and carrying the rioters out.

The federal enforcement effort remains ongoing as DHS continues arrest operations throughout New Orleans.
