Two young students in California are in critical condition after a shooting at Feather River School of Seventh-Day Adventists in Palermo on Wednesday.
The suspect, 56-year-old Glenn Litton, carried out the attack, allegedly motivated by his perception of U.S. and Israeli actions in the Middle East.
According to authorities, Litton left behind a manifesto claiming the shooting was a “necessitated response” to what he described as “genocide and oppression of Palestinians” and U.S. involvement in Israel’s military actions.

Litton, using the alias “Michael Sanders,” posed as a parent seeking to enroll a child in the school.
He met with staff and toured the facility before heading toward the restroom. Moments later, gunshots and screams were heard.
Two students, 6-year-old Roman Mendez and 5-year-old Elias Wolford, were critically injured in the attack. Mendez was shot twice, and Wolford was shot once. Both children remain in critical but stable condition.
Litton fatally shot himself before police arrived. Authorities later identified the weapon as a “ghost gun,” a firearm assembled from untraceable parts.
“They have a long road ahead of them,” Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea said of the two victims. “The fact that they are currently still with us is a miracle.”
Litton’s manifesto explicitly linked the shooting to Israel’s ongoing military operations against Hamas and Houthi terrorists.
He referred to the attack as a “countermeasure” by the “International Alliance.” Police are still investigating whether this group exists or was a fabrication of Litton’s delusions.
“Countermeasures involving child execution has now been imposed at the Seventh Day Adventist school in California,” Litton wrote.
He accused the United States of complicity in alleged war crimes, adding, “I, Lieutenant Glenn Litton of the Alliance, carried out countermeasures in necessitated response to America’s involvement with genocide and oppression of Palestinians along with attacks towards Yemen.”
Litton had also scheduled a visit to Red Bluff Seventh-Day Adventist School, suggesting it could have been a second target.
Investigators revealed that Litton had a history of criminal behavior and mental health issues. They are still working to determine why he targeted Seventh-Day Adventist schools specifically.
This attack follows heightened tensions after the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led terrorist attack on Israeli civilians.
The aftermath has seen increased unrest in the United States and globally, with anti-Israel groups disrupting public spaces, occupying buildings, and calling for a “global intifada.”
Jewish communities, in particular, have faced threats and violence. Casey Babb, a senior fellow with the MacDonald Laurier Institute in Ottawa, called the school shooting “conspiratorial, antisemitic, hate-filled carnage.”
“This is what ‘Globalize the Intifada’ looks like,” Babb added, linking the violence to broader calls for action against Israel and its allies.
The shooter’s justification echoed allegations by Hamas that Israel deliberately targets civilian areas in Gaza.
Critics counter that Hamas operates in densely populated areas, using civilians as “human shields” by placing military operations near hospitals and schools.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have historically maintained one of the lowest civilian casualty ratios in conflict zones, with estimates ranging from 1.5:1 to 3:1, far below the global average of 9:1, according to the United Nations.
As investigations continue, the incident highlights the growing impact of geopolitical conflicts on domestic safety and underscores the need for vigilance in protecting vulnerable populations from ideologically driven violence.
Authorities are urging the community to remain united in support of the victims and their families.
