A legal group with connections to Antifa has been providing training and support to activists organizing protests against Tesla and its CEO Elon Musk, according to recent reports.

The Oregon-based Civil Liberties Defense Center (CLDC) has been active in supporting left-wing demonstrations and legal defenses of Antifa-affiliated individuals.

The group has recently offered guidance to organizers of the “Tesla Takedown” movement, a nationwide anti-Tesla effort partly motivated by Musk’s connection to President Donald Trump.

Elon Musk and President-elect Donald Trump are pictured speaking at the ‘Make America Great Again Victory Rally’ at the Capital One Arena in Washington.

CLDC Executive Director Lauren Regan participated in a virtual training session on March 19, warning activists to remain alert when protesting in certain areas of the country.

“It’s time to be strategic and effective, but it’s not time to be afraid or silenced,” Regan said during the training call.

“There are going to be some areas of the country that are very conservative and are going to be hard on dissidents or activists no matter what the timing, and then there are other places that are going to be less so.”

The group drew national attention in 2019 after one of its volunteers, Charlie Landeros, was killed by police outside a Eugene, Oregon middle school.

According to the district attorney’s investigation, Landeros opened fire on a police officer during a dispute related to a custody battle involving his daughter.

Landeros was fatally shot by a second officer during the altercation.

The investigation determined the officers’ actions were justified.

The FBI had reportedly received prior warnings about Landeros, who had allegedly posted violent anti-police messages on social media, including “time to start killing pigs.”

Despite this, CLDC later issued a statement raising concerns about the investigation, claiming Landeros was a victim of disproportionate police violence against people of color.

CLDC has also represented other Antifa-linked individuals, including Alissa Azar, who was convicted in 2021 of felony riot and second-degree disorderly conduct after a Portland protest turned into a violent clash with the Proud Boys.

A jury deadlocked on a separate charge of illegal use of mace.

The group objected to Azar’s 14-day sentence, claiming she was merely a “journalist” reporting on political violence.

CLDC’s involvement in activist causes dates back decades.

Regan has stated that she began defending environmental protesters in 1997 and founded the organization after the 9/11 attacks, citing concerns about government overreach.

The group also supported the “Stop Cop City” protests in Georgia, where law enforcement and construction crews were targeted with vandalism and arson in 2023.

In a 2024 statement, CLDC claimed the individuals involved had been unfairly labeled as terrorists, despite violent incidents being documented.

CLDC has taken an active role in organizing and advising participants in the March 29 “Global Day of Action,” which included demonstrations at Tesla facilities across the United States.

The protests were associated with the “Tesla Takedown” movement, which has opposed Elon Musk’s leadership of Tesla, citing both labor concerns and political ties to President Trump.

While organizers of the Tesla Takedown events have stated that they “oppose violence, vandalism and destruction of property,” several reports emerged of altercations and threats linked to the demonstrations.

On March 21, the CLDC partnered with Indivisible, another left-wing activist group, to conduct a “know your rights” training in Eugene, Oregon.

Indivisible also took part in the March protests.

In a March 26 online advisory, CLDC offered guidance to anti-Musk and anti-Trump demonstrators on handling police encounters.

The statement advised protesters not to cooperate with law enforcement, saying, “Our communities often cannot rely on or trust police, so we need to think, plan, and practice how we can help each other be safer.”

“Political movement participants do not cooperate or snitch to the State – which is often your political adversary,” the group said.

CLDC’s continued support for activist efforts with political and ideological motivations remains under scrutiny as protests escalate and legal questions surrounding coordination and violence persist.
