Residents in Queens, New York, are voicing renewed frustration as open prostitution, illegal street vending, and unsanitary conditions have reemerged along Roosevelt Avenue — a corridor represented by Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Grace Meng, as reported by Fox News.
Despite recent police crackdowns, locals say the area has returned to a state resembling a lawless “Red Light district.”
Fox News Digital reported observing as many as 30 women openly soliciting men for sex on a single block of Roosevelt Avenue, just steps from where children and families were walking.

The strip is lined with vendors selling food, suspected counterfeit goods, and merchandise directly out of parked vehicles — all despite the NYPD’s Operation Restore Roosevelt, a 90-day initiative launched in October to target prostitution, gang activity, and illegal vending.
Ramses Frias, a Republican City Council candidate and local activist, told Fox News Digital that the situation has deteriorated.
“Our residents feel like prisoners in their own homes while criminals walk freely, preying on helpless victims,” Frias said, adding that criminal gangs like the 18th Street gang and Tren de Aragua are suspected to be operating in the area.

Most of the prostitution occurs on the side of Roosevelt Avenue, represented by Rep. Grace Meng, while street vendors crowd the side represented by Rep. Ocasio-Cortez.
Local law enforcement officials say they have yet to receive any support from either member of Congress in their crime-fighting efforts.
NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Operations Kaz Daughtry confirmed that while the crackdown has produced results — including a 29% drop in crime, 15 brothel raids, and reductions in robberies and assaults — persistent issues remain.
“Never seen her,” Daughtry said of Ocasio-Cortez, noting she has not reached out to law enforcement regarding the ongoing situation. “We would really love her assistance to help us,” he added.
After a recent town hall hosted by Ocasio-Cortez, the issue was not addressed by the congresswoman or brought up by attendees. However, community members say the problem is longstanding and getting worse.
Residents described seeing women operating brothels above stores near schools, dumping wastewater into storm drains, and threading eyebrows on sidewalks.
On Tuesday, police raided two brothels on Meng’s side of the avenue. Witnesses described crowds gathering, some heckling the suspects as they were led away.
Frias argued that elected leaders have failed the community and called for stricter laws and leadership focused on public safety. “Our laws need to become stricter, and it’s time to elect representatives who have the best interests of the community and its safety as a priority,” he said.
Mayor Eric Adams and City Councilman Francisco Moya — a moderate Democrat — partnered with police to launch the original enforcement effort. Daughtry praised Moya for being actively involved, unlike Ocasio-Cortez.
Meng told Fox News Digital she is working with Moya and law enforcement and acknowledged the “concerning” conditions. Ocasio-Cortez’s office claimed she had helped install lighting in the neighborhood but offered no comment on the illegal activity directly.
