Arizona State Senator Analise Ortiz (D) is facing mounting criticism and potential legal consequences after she was found sharing details about federal immigration enforcement actions in her district.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed this week that it is reviewing Ortiz’s social media activity after she posted on Instagram warning her community about Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations.

DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin condemned Ortiz’s actions in a statement to Fox News Digital, warning that the senator may have crossed a legal line.

“Arizona state Senator Analise Ortiz is siding with vicious cartels, human traffickers, and violent criminals over American citizens,” McLaughlin said.
She added, “This certainly looks like obstruction of justice.”
The DHS response follows Ortiz’s now-flagged Instagram activity, in which she appeared to alert individuals about immigration enforcement sweeps.
The posts have prompted concerns from federal officials that Ortiz’s warnings may have interfered with active federal operations.
“The men and women of ICE put their lives on the line every day to arrest violent criminal illegal aliens to protect and defend the lives of American citizens,” McLaughlin stated.
“Make no mistake, sanctuary politicians like Arizona Senator Analise Ortiz are contributing to the surge in assaults of our ICE officers through their repeated vilification and demonization of ICE.”
Republican lawmakers in Arizona have responded swiftly. State Senator Jake Hoffman (R) has announced that he is preparing to file an ethics complaint against Ortiz and is also calling for her expulsion from the state Senate.
🚨 Democrat State Senator openly impeding ICE efforts to deport illegal alien criminals in AZ.
She’s doxxing ICE agents & openly putting the lives of American law enforcement at risk.
I’ll be filing an ethics complaint.
She should be expelled from the Arizona legislature. pic.twitter.com/x9GrdxjwlA

State Representative Rachel Keshel (R) has voiced support for that move.
I agree 100%!!!
She always spent more time acting like a progressive activist on the House floor than she did a public servant.
Complete and total embarrassment.
Expel her!!! https://t.co/2gf01ae5n6

In addition to the ethics complaint, Ortiz has reportedly been referred for further investigation to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona.
It is unclear at this time whether federal prosecutors intend to pursue criminal charges.

Ortiz has received support from Democratic colleagues. U.S. Representative Yassamin Ansari (D-AZ) expressed her endorsement of Ortiz’s actions.
I proudly stand with @SenAnaliseOrtiz against the Trump regime.
Arizona Republicans are complicit in Trump’s authoritarianism and ICE’s unlawful actions— this will be a stain on our country for generations to come. https://t.co/jwOytpT0hh

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes also defended Ortiz, suggesting her Instagram post falls under First Amendment protections.
Warren Petersen is using his position as Sen. President to threaten and intimidate Sen. Analise Ortiz for exercising her 1st Amendment rights. That’s not leadership—it’s bullying. I know he’s only been a lawyer for a year and a half but he needs a CLE on the Bill of Rights.

However, Republican lawmakers are pushing back on that argument.
Arizona State Representative John Gillette (R) argued that Ortiz’s posts go beyond protected speech and could endanger federal law enforcement personnel.
The controversy surrounding Ortiz comes just days after another Democrat state lawmaker drew national attention for inflammatory remarks about ICE.
Rhode Island State Representative Enrique Sanchez (D) made headlines after posting on X, “It will be soon the day that I confront these Nazi ICE thugs in person for terrorizing our communities. It will be a day of reckoning and no going back.”
It will be soon the day that I confront these Nazi ICE thugs in person for terrorizing our communities. It will be a day of reckoning and no going back.
I hope the people of Providence and Rhode Island have our back. They will try to end our work and put down our struggle.
— State Representative Enrique Sanchez (@EnriqueForRI) July 31, 2025
The statement drew condemnation and reportedly placed Sanchez on DHS’s radar.
The broader conversation over immigration enforcement and state-level interference continues as lawmakers in various Democrat-led states increasingly take public stances against federal immigration authorities.
In Arizona, the fallout over Ortiz’s actions is intensifying, with state Republican leaders pushing for accountability.
As investigations proceed and ethics complaints are filed, it remains to be seen what consequences, if any, Ortiz will face.
No official charges have been filed as of Thursday, and Ortiz has not issued a public statement responding to the criticism or the DHS inquiry.
The Arizona Senate has not yet scheduled a formal review of Hoffman’s forthcoming ethics complaint.
